5 Cal Poly Football Players Arrested For Burglarizing Fraternity House

The college football season may only be weeks away, but not all football players are focused on their opening game. Some, such as a select few at Cal Poly, are more interested in burglarizing fraternity houses.

Officers from the San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested five members of the Cal Poly football team over the weekend after they were caught breaking into the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house near campus.

One of the players, 19-year-old Cameron Akins, a wide receiver, is accused of bringing a handgun into the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house, then fighting and biting an officer when police arrived. Officers managed to subdue Akins with the help of others at the home and arrested him for robbery with a firearm, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Police arrested the other players later Sunday morning. Investigators charged Dominique Love, 19, and Cortland Fort, 20, with robbery and Jake Brito, 18, and Kristaan Ivory, 20, with conspiracy to commit robbery.

Many of these players were thought to be potential starters for the upcoming season, and Ivory, a running back, is a standout for the team.

Police say the robbery occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. When officers arrived, they discovered Akins in the courtyard confronting a victim before fighting several officers and civilians who attempted to arrest him. Fort was found fleeing the scene in a vehicle, and the other suspects were individually arrested around campus later in the day.

The university released the following statement on the issue:

“The university will do all it can to work with San Luis Obispo police in helping to determine what occurred. The five football student-athletes alleged to have taken part in this incident have been suspended from all team activities effective immediately, and the university will conduct internal investigations into possible student conduct violations.”

Cal Poly is set to take on New Mexico State to start the season on August 28, and it’s safe to assume the felonious five will not participate.
