857 Arrested Around ASU Campus During First Two Weekends Of Fall Semester
At schools across the country, returning students and new freshmen enjoyed the festivities that occur every year during the week before classes start. Upperclassmen have nothing to worry about, so they spend all seven days in an alcohol-fueled stupor. New freshmen spend their time doing stupid orientation activities, or if they’re smart, they drink along with the upperclassmen.
While this annual ritual is similar at all but a few schools (looking at you, Liberty and Brigham Young), there are obviously some schools that stand out. Arizona State University is one of those schools.
Known for its attractive female students and warm weather, ASU also knows how to have a great time. The days leading up to the beginning of classes were just that: a great time. Like all good times, some people, like the cops, got a little pissed off and decided that they needed to keep folks from enjoying themselves.
The arrest stats from the first weekend before classes started are pretty incredible — 371 arrests were made in just three days. This number is the result of an alcohol task force that was created to control the widespread drinking and partying. You might say that things got out of hand. I’d say people were just trying to relax and enjoy the nice weather before school started, but to each his own.
The arrest numbers went up the following weekend:
Here’s this weekend’s breakdown from Tempe PD:
Total stops: 1,812
Total citations: 919
Total arrests: 486
Arrests for minors in possession of alcohol: 208
Total DUI arrests: 85
Calls for loud parties: 68
Nuisance notices: 26
Minors, under the age of 18, in possession of alcohol: 14
Party notices with minors in possession of alcohol: 11
Average blood-alcohol level for DUI suspects: .136
By my count, that’s 857 arrests over the first two weekends of the semester, most of which it’s safe to assume are ASU students. Not a bad score sheet for the first weekend, ASU, but you can do better. You’ve got the whole year ahead of you.
In the first weekend after classes started, the same task force went out and nabbed 486 people in a three-day stretch, which seems to mean that the partyin’ is on the rise.
Yes. The partyin’ is on the rise.
