857 Arrested Around ASU Campus During First Two Weekends Of Fall Semester

At schools across the country, returning students and new freshmen enjoyed the festivities that occur every year during the week before classes start. Upperclassmen have nothing to worry about, so they spend all seven days in an alcohol-fueled stupor. New freshmen spend their time doing stupid orientation activities, or if they’re smart, they drink along with the upperclassmen.

While this annual ritual is similar at all but a few schools (looking at you, Liberty and Brigham Young), there are obviously some schools that stand out. Arizona State University is one of those schools.

Known for its attractive female students and warm weather, ASU also knows how to have a great time. The days leading up to the beginning of classes were just that: a great time. Like all good times, some people, like the cops, got a little pissed off and decided that they needed to keep folks from enjoying themselves.

The arrest stats from the first weekend before classes started are pretty incredible — 371 arrests were made in just three days. This number is the result of an alcohol task force that was created to control the widespread drinking and partying. You might say that things got out of hand. I’d say people were just trying to relax and enjoy the nice weather before school started, but to each his own.

The arrest numbers went up the following weekend:

Here’s this weekend’s breakdown from Tempe PD:

Total stops: 1,812
Total citations: 919
Total arrests: 486
Arrests for minors in possession of alcohol: 208
Total DUI arrests: 85
Calls for loud parties: 68
Nuisance notices: 26
Minors, under the age of 18, in possession of alcohol: 14
Party notices with minors in possession of alcohol: 11
Average blood-alcohol level for DUI suspects: .136

By my count, that’s 857 arrests over the first two weekends of the semester, most of which it’s safe to assume are ASU students. Not a bad score sheet for the first weekend, ASU, but you can do better. You’ve got the whole year ahead of you.

In the first weekend after classes started, the same task force went out and nabbed 486 people in a three-day stretch, which seems to mean that the partyin’ is on the rise.

Yes. The partyin’ is on the rise.

I would walk all those ladies home and wish them a good night. Might even give them a hug

It says “Total arrests: 486.” The MIP arrests were included I’m pretty sure.

His point is that 486 were arrested not 857. You are double counting the Minor in possession and DUI arrests. With the numbers you posted none of them even add up to 847. The only time this math works is when you are the president of your own company figuring out your own salary.

“The weekend before classes started at Arizona State University, a task force focused on alcohol-related crimes in Tempe arrested 371 people in just three days.

In the first weekend after classes started, the same task force went out and nabbed 486 people in a three-day stretch, which seems to mean that the partyin’ is on the rise.”

These two paragraphs would indicate 371 the first weekend, and 486 the second weekend. Right?

Since ASU’s Mormon GDI president eliminated fraternity row, alcohol-related arrests have continued to skyrocket. Coincidence? Naw. Good job shithead, you’re goal to destroy ASU’s party reputation is really on point.

Wow, 208 arrests for minors in possession.
What impact did their “crime” have on anyone else exactly?
Laws that punish legal adults for doing adult things are prohibitionist, and have no place in modern society.
Haven’t we learned anything from the 1920’s? The concept of supply and demand is essential to economic theory. Because 18-20 year olds demand booze, just as our forefathers did during Prohibition, a supply will always be met, whether it’s legal or not.

And please, save yourself from public mockery spewing out the latest MADD propaganda round of pseudo-science. “An 18 year old’s brain is still in development.” Yeah? So is a 31 year old’s, a 51 year old’s, or an 81 year old’s. What’s so magic about the number 21? Are those under that age not responsible enough to handle alcohol 12 hours before their 21st birthday?

The rise in partying only reflects a growing trend; ASU partying is no longer safely confined to campus. Michael Crow’s draconian neo-prohibitionist policies are shifting the blame of natural college partying away from campus to the surrounding communities. What used to be a problem of campus security is now Scottsdale’s, Tempe’s, Mesa’s, Glendale’s, Chandler’s, and other surrounding towns.

How much does all that cost, in dollars and manpower, to permanently tarnish legal records of victims of victimless crimes?
