Daily Beast & Newsweek Release Their Top 25 National Fraternities and Sororities List

The Daily Beast and Newsweek Magazine have released their 2012 College Rankings List, and it’s pretty much like every other college rankings list you’ve ever seen. There are categories for prettiest campus, biggest party schools, happiest colleges, etc. They did however also take the time to rank the top 25 fraternities and sororities nationally. The explanation of their rankings, and the rankings themselves, are below. I’m not going to lie, some of the criteria they used for these rankings seemed… odd, or at least not as fully encompassing as they should/could have been, but with that said the rankings, especially the top 5 for each category, turned out more or less how I thought they would. There were, however, a few surprises.

Top 25 Sororities

To analyze which sororities have the largest national footprint, most devoted sisters, and greatest philanthropic footprint, we compared the 26 Panhellenic Conference sororities based on the number of active collegiate chapters, the number of Twitter followers and Facebook fans (to measure alumni and member interest) and the amount of money the sorority’s non-profit fund donated to 501(c)(3) organizations according the most recent public filing (funds were normalized using a per-chapter ratio). Funds donated to individual chapters, classified as a 501(c)(7) non-profit social club, were not considered for this aspect of the ranking.

We attempted to get an accurate count of the current number of active collegiate chapters from a variety of sources, and contacted all sororities to verify. Several sororities and The National Panhellenic Conference declined to participate or comment for this article due to their governance policies.

Top 25 Fraternities

For all the attention devoted to the hazing practices and bullying of a few collegiate fraternities, the average Greek frat brother is more active in his community and has a higher G.P.A. than his non-fraternity peers. (Ed. Note: Boom roasted) In order to compare the 75 fraternities that are members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference, we first considered the number of active collegiate chapters for each. We also considered the number of alumni who are currently members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the alumni, if any, who became president. Lastly, we considered the amount of money the fraternity’s non-profit fund donated to 501(c)(3) organizations according the most recent public filing (funds were normalized using a per-chapter ratio). Funds donated to individual chapters, classified as a 501(c)(7) non-profit social club, were not considered for this aspect of the ranking.

Where’s Phi Kappa Psi? Chapters in almost every state, 1 presidential alumni, the guy from Jaws, Scrubs, Adams Family, Mayor Bloomberg, and Mark Spitz. Does tons of philanthropy, hell it’s the fucking motto. Amiright?

12 years ago at 11:37 am
    2. thefratasticmrfox

I put him down cause he’s a politician. Wilson wasn’t a good president but he was still a president. My comment was mostly a rant

At the very least they could have looked at foundation dollars, amount of money given in scholarships, NIC awards given, or any number of factors. The rest of the lists are pretty shitty anyway. A lot of small, liberal arts schools make the cut.

12 years ago at 12:47 pm
    4. TXLonghorn1852

For real. Phi Psi has Woodrow Wilson as well as 2 active members of congress, not to mention the 100 or so retired ones, which already puts us ahead of a lot of people on this list. Throw in a bunch of Fortune 500 company founders and executives as well as people such as Billy Mitchell, Mark Spitz, and Tex Schramm and there’s no reason we shouldn’t be on this list. Kappa Sig too. They’ve got a ridiculous amount of really successful business alumni too but they’re not on here either. Plus they have over 300 chapters! This list is retarded.

12 years ago at 1:21 pm
    5. 1852_

I’m with TXLonghorn on this one. I was shocked that my Fraternity wasn’t on this list and also the rankings for a number of other ones. Something is telling me that these guys really didn’t do as much research as they’d have everyone think while compiling this list.

Wilson was a shitty president. But I agree that the makers of this list could have used better measurements.

    7. Bronan the Barbarian

Let’s be honest, any list that includes Pike in a top 25, then doesn’t include Phi Psi or Kappa Sig is a list compiled by people who assume number of chapters = best fraternity in the country. We have about 110 right now, counting colonies, but even our worst chapters are mostly “meh” instead of a collective of bottom tier fucks who can’t hold a conversation.

Plus, we have the richest national foundation. Does that count for nothing?

If you were at BLTW you shouldn’t be surprised by our Number 1 status. 70+ Peterson Blues, 6 Peterson Golds, 1,970 leaders of men in attendance; IHSV indeed.

^^^^Balfour is the most god awful thing. You are what is wrong with the world if you think any of that Peterson shit will do anything for you in life.

^^ I don’t get the nationals hate, man. Were you in a chapter that got their shit pulled or something? In case you weren’t aware, Sigma Chi’s national headquarters is run exclusively by old white guys who were brought up in the age of merciless hazing, spectacular partying, and rampant cocaine usage. I promise you that as long as your school isn’t making noises, you’re staying out of the negative news spotlight, and you don’t owe them any money, they could really give a shit what you do.

Sigma Chi’s partnership with the HCI is about as close to founding your own philanthropy as it gets without actually doing it.
