Why I’m Still a Republican

Over the weekend Missouri Representative Todd Akin made absolutely inexcusable remarks, which you’ve probably heard by now, about abortion and rape. It was just another case of a high-profile Republican talking out of his ass without considering the consequences. Of course this led to an all out thrashing of the right from the left, and probably slated Democrat Claire McCaskill to the US Senate for another term.

In my mind, the GOP is in its darkest days. I’ll be straight up – I’m a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. As such, I’m going to issue a challenge to all Republicans. Shut your goddamn mouths. You are not elected into public office to spew your idiotic morality speech to the mainstream. You are elected to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. I couldn’t care less if you’re a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist or Martian. Our country is in a ten-foot deep, mile-wide shit hole. Praying, hating gay people, cursing the left, being pro-life, pro-family or pro-whateverthefuck isn’t going to fix the problems we have right now. Some politicians may argue that this country is where it is because we “lost our values.” I say bullshit. We are where we are because we started caring too much about our values. Our values are OUR values, no one else’s. Keep that shit to yourself.

Defend our country from financial obliteration. Stop turning everything into a right versus left debate. Sometimes there isn’t a right answer, which is why this country has been locked in an abortion debate ever since the Roe v. Wade decision. There’s not a right answer to everything. Abortion is not a political issue. It is a personal opinion. Most abortions are done by way of a pill taken in the weeks after conception, but fervent pro-life supporters would like you to think that the doctor sticks a clothes hanger up there, twists it around and pulls out a kicking fetus. Abortion is a dirty word, but it’s not what most politicians would like you to think it is.

But back to why I’m still a Republican… I’m still a Republican because I believe at the heart and soul of the GOP it is a party founded on the belief that all Americans are given the right to live their lives in the pursuit of happiness with minimal government intrusion. It is a party that believes in the Constitution of the United States, and a party that believes war is an act of desperation, not intimidation.

I assume roughly 95% of you who read this site align yourself with the Republican party, and I can guarantee at least half of you are doing it for all the wrong reasons. A political party is a political party because of politics. Not religious affiliation, personal beliefs, or where you were born.

This is not an endorsement or condemnation of Mitt Romney or any other Republican political candidates. It’s bigger than that. It is a call to action. To stand up for what the Grand Old Party used to stand for.

Everyone deserves a chance to succeed.

The government shouldn’t solve all of your problems.

Religion and personal preference should not influence our laws.

This is not the country I was born in and it is certainly not the country I want to die in.

So, to the politicians (and to everyone) that represent my party, think about everything I just said next time you open up your mouth in a political debate. You can call yourself conservative all you want without giving any reason as to why, but if that’s the case then in reality you’re no better than the hippie on the street corner obliviously banging on his bongos.

Speaking from experience, you should pull the gerbil out of your bum. Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King, Jr., FDR, and a shit-ton of other liberals were all FaF… Not to mention the few remaining stubborn Dixiecrats.

^^^^^^^^ FDR set this entire inflation bubble in motion because of the amount he expanded the government during the great depression. 32 new government agencies NF.

In fairness MLK Jr was pretty fratty; beating up hookers, plagerizing his way through college, stealing other peoples speeches, etc.

MLK was also a plagiarizer (on both his speeches and his doctoral dissertation) and a communist

Although I agree for the most part with everything you said, you were pretty harsh on the values because they can play a role in some cases. Part of what is great about America is that you can’t tell me how to vote just like I can’t tell you. Having said that, YES, Republicans are killing themselves by making this election about anything other than economic policy and by trying to force beliefs on people who otherwise probably would vote Red. The Muslim comment though?? Seriously bro…

Have you paid any attention to the campaigns at all? All Romney and Ryan are doing are trying to make this election about real issues. The main stream liberal media pushes these things so hopefully no one will pay attention to Barack HUSSEIN Obama’s god-awful record as president. There is not nearly as much attention paid to the constant gaffe’s by Biden or some of these accusations that spewed out of the democratic party. This is the same party who accuses romney of being a tax cheat, a murderer, and claim the republican party wants us to have dirty air and water.

Why? He is not going to win. I guarentee it. I’m a Libertarian at heart but the fact of the matter is we live in a two-party system so its basically choosing the lesser of two evils. Unless of course you live in a state that is guarenteed to be red, then you can vote to put 3rd party candidates on the ballot because it won’t take away from Romney.

There are times whn it’s important to be of principles and there are times when one should simply be pragmatic.

If you honestly value your principles, sometimes you have to sacrifice those of lesser priority. For instance, I am pro gay marriage, but more importantly, pro free market. So to keep fiscal conservatism intact, I have ti vote for a party that I don’t always stand shoulder to shoulder with. Free enterprise is too much of a priority to let the rest of my principles get in the way,

^This guy gets it. Gay marriage will eventualy become legal anyway regardless. Socialism, however, is very difficult to be reversed. Once you give people something, it’s nearly impossible to take it away.

Gary Johnson is a limp dick candidate, we don’t run against Democrats to make a point, we run against Democrats to win.

In the most important election in our generation you want to give half a vote to Obama. A vote for Gary Johnson is pointless. I understand you may have your values, but just listen to a speech by Romney and Ryan. Those guys seem to really get it. I wasn’t as sure about Romney until he picked Ryan. He could of gone safe, but these guys truly seem like they want to change the direction of this country.

^ “could have” not “could of”. If you want to talk about the economy, give credit to people who you think “get it”, and be taken seriously without actually saying anything at all with any substance, then, at the very least, you should try not to fuck up the English language.

Also to add, morality influences our laws, and that is a definite. To some, religion has defined our morals, to others, morals have defined our religions. Either way, our laws have had, and may continue to have, religious influence.

^^Of course morals and religion influence out votes but what this guy is saying is that we don’t need politicians to say what our morals and religious convictions should be. WE should be able to figure out what WE believe.

I am a Libertarian but am registered as a Republican. The way I figure, social equality is inevitable, so there is no need to worry about pushing for socially liberal values. Fiscal policies, however, if not closely monitored and left in the wrong hands, can really fuck up our economy and furthermore our future.

There is an organization within the party called the Republican Liberty Caucus. Worth looking into as a way to save the party from itself.

^^^^^^this comment, along with the main poster, describes how I feel as well. If there was a libertarian candidate that could beat Obama in this election, I’d vote for him/her in a heartbeat. But for the sake of our economy, I might just have to go with Romney.
