JMU Star Player Arrested On Selection Sunday

I’ll admit it, I had a good a laugh last night when scrolling through my social media feeds shortly after the Selection Sunday special unveiled the field for the NCAA Men’s Basketball championship tournament. After seeing all these amateur-hour overnight March Madness fanatics saying things like “Solid draw for (insert school)! Let’s go (insert mascot)! This is totally our year!” or “Just submitted the bracket, can’t wait to win the office pool,” I couldn’t help but think how stupid these people were for thinking they could understand all the intangibles that play into this tournament every single year.

Really, who submits a bracket on Sunday night?! Way too much can go wrong between now and Thursday morning.

Thinking about this last night, I questioned myself about what could possibly be a game changer this year, and then for some reason, “an important player going to jail” ran through my consciousness…and what do you know?

According to an SB Nation report today, it seems a power forward who led his team to a play-in game for the #16 seed in the East region and a potential first-round match-up with #1 Indiana, just happened to fulfill my prophecy.

What should have been a day of celebration for James Madison has turned into a day of controversy, as forward Rayshawn Goins was arrested on Selection Sunday for obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct, according to Mark Selig of the Daily News-Record.

Goins was taken to Rockingham County Jail in Virginia, but he was cooperative with police and released on a $2,500 unsecured bond. Selig reports that the incident stemmed from a team party that “got out of hand” late Saturday night.

The university released an official statement saying that they are aware of the situation and will review the details on Monday. The arrest could affect Goins’ status for James Madison’s first round NCAA Tournament Game against LIU-Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Wow. Talk about a bubble buster for the JMU Dukes, who were probably getting revved up for their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 19 years.

It’s technically only a play-in game, but what a dumbass.

Goins is a senior who averaged a team-high 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this year and led James Madison to the CAA Championship.
