George Washington’s Whiskey Up For Sale
Do you love America? Do you love whiskey? Do you have about 100 bucks on hand that you really want to get rid of? Apparently, Mount Vernon, the esteemed estate of our first Commander-in-Chief, is trying to help you out.
Starting April 4th, they’re selling the original George W’s personal rye whiskey recipe. They’re basically using the exact same process Washington used, thanks to his incredibly meticulous record keeping practices. How his recipe survived 250 years, I have no clue. If I was making alcohol at home, you’d probably end up finding me passed out on the floor, shit scattered all around the room, with no idea what I did to make said alcohol. Of course, I’m no George Washington. Maybe Washington did do it that way, yet managed to keep his notes together. I like to think that’s what happened.
In any case, the crazy thing about this recipe is that it’s apparently closer to what we would think of today as white lightning, which means it could have “a pretty sharp taste,” as the Associate Director over at Mt. Vernon put it. 250 years of development has apparently done a lot for whiskey science.
In terms of the history and heritage of alcohol in this country, whiskey definitely seems to be one of the most American. We can argue the merits of the top shelf brands and above for hours, but good, classic whiskey for the average lover of good liquor is almost uniquely American. Sure, you can get your $300 import of Scotch, but nothing beats a good, high quality American whiskey when you’re just looking to have a night with some brothers. Or, in this case, a glass of Washington’s white lightning. That’s how Washington did it, that’s how America does it, and it’s worked out pretty well so far.

Throw in some of Jefferson’s Mary Jane and you’ve got a deal.
12 years ago at 2:38 pmNobody can make Washington’s whiskey as well as his salves did
12 years ago at 2:50 pmI did not know he had salves. Thanks for the enlightenment.
12 years ago at 2:57 pmHe did
12 years ago at 3:15 pm^right over his head.
12 years ago at 10:36 amHonestly no matter your level of patriotism you have to admit that scotch is better then bourbon any day of the week.
12 years ago at 3:01 pmI do love a good scotch (my family line’s drink is a scotch), but bourbon is about as American as it gets. When I want to go very classy for a family dinner or something, we usually break out the scotch. Otherwise, it’s pretty much bourbon at the bar.
12 years ago at 3:12 pmEspecially when you take into account the fact that Scotch-Irish immigrants were the people responsible for bringing the recipe over. The rest is history.
12 years ago at 3:33 pmScotch then bourbon or bourbon then scotch. Either way is fine.
12 years ago at 1:33 pmSo this is essentially $100 moonshine?
12 years ago at 3:26 pmThat’s actually exactly what this is.
12 years ago at 3:36 pmI will stick to the thirty dollars jars that aren’t fake 80 proof shine
12 years ago at 5:25 pmI’m sure there are try-hards that will say otherwise, but its hard to not admit the colonials raged a lot harder than we do.

12 years ago at 4:14 pmThinking about this just makes me want to drink with Washington. Let me know when you can make that happen.
