Legends Of Golf Cinema: Part 1

happy-gilmore

With the weather getting nicer by the day, and the grass becoming greener, Spring is truly upon us. With it comes the best event of the golf calendar – The Masters.

Due to the approaching epicness that is Augusta, I was stricken with a common nostalgia that I often feel this time of year: the need to sit down and re-watch some of my favorite golf-themed films. While we can always argue which 18-hole film is the best, it’s indisputable that there are a multitude of characters who drove, cursed, pitched, drank, and putted their way into our hearts over the years.

Without further adieu, I give you the Legends Of Golf Cinema: Part I…

Al Czervik

“Well I’ll tell you what’s satisfying: cash. I’ll shoot you 18 holes for ten thousand bucks!”

Definitely the late Rodney Dangerfield’s most recognizable character, Al Czervick is the newly rich, party obsessed, genuine asshole of a gentleman, real-estate mogul who pays a visit to the Bushwood Country Club in the classic film Caddyshack.

Looking to purchase and develop the club with his new fortune, Czervick’s uninhibited, hilarious antics see him with walk the course stereo built into his golf bag, command the club house in the lewdest possible fashion, and throw a few clubs along the way. A man who loves expensive things and insane wagers, he manages to sink Judge Elihu Smails’ newly christened yacht, and solicit a great cinema rivalry that culminates in the most-storied fictional golf duel ever, between the Judge and Danny Noonan.

With the role, Dangerfield impeccably cultivated the image of a rowdy gentleman that gives zero fucks about anything, unless it pertains to having fun.

Here are some of Al’s finer moments:

You know you posted a link to a movie about a black caddie in French right? NF.

I do. It was literally the ONLY link I could find with that epic scene. Plus, there’s no dialogue in that putt sinking sequence anyway.

Anyone else posting up on the couch tomorrow and watching the Masters all day? Damn, I’m so excited.

If you haven’t been at the driving range and try a happy Gilmore and just completely whiff your lying.

The player/caddy relationship between Rannulph Junuh and Bagger Vance is just so perfectly racist.
