12-Year-Old Ohio State Fan With Cancer Named His Tumor “Michigan” And Then Beat It

This is easily one of the best stories I’ve read in a while.

Troy and Denise Reed met as members of The Ohio State University Marching Band. They’re diehard Buckeyes, and those values were instilled in their children, Collin and Grant.

When Grant was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago, he nicknamed the disease “Michigan.” But Friday, he beat Blue.

SUCK IT MICHIGAN! You just got your dick kicked in by Grant and a team of Ohio’s finest doctors!

It’s always great to hear about a little kid beating cancer, but it’s even better when the kid has a sense of humor about it. Ohio State took notice of Grant’s condition, as well. In December, OSU head coach Urban Meyer stopped by and visited with Grant.

Now that Grant is finished with chemotherapy, doctors say his prognosis looks good.

“We’ve beaten Michigan for the short term, but like any rival, there’s a chance it can come back,” Troy [Grant’s father] said.

I really appreciate this family’s commitment to sports hate. I wish they would have taken it a step further and and started really tearing into Michigan.

“At first Grant’s white blood cells were spread pretty thin and Michigan was doing whatever it wanted to him, but once Grant’s immune system realized Michigan had no deep game they stacked the line and really just took ’em to the cleaners…Denard Robinson sucks.”

I also now like to assume that this family classifies all illnesses as various B1G member institutions. The common cold? Northwestern. High blood pressure? Wisconsin. Crabs? More like a mean case of Indiana.

Before he left, Grant and his brother donated two wagons for future patients at the hospital — part of the Buckeye way to pay it forward.

“We did make the stipulation. It had to say ‘Beat Michigan’ on it,” Troy said.
