Scientists Have Created A Beer That Rehydrates You

There’s definitely a strong correlation between how hot it is outside and how much beer I drink. On a hot, humid day, there isn’t much better than having one or twelve cold ones. Unfortunately, alcohol dehydrates you, leading to hangovers and potentially worse complications. Thankfully, our good friends over in the world of science have been putting in the man hours to solve the problem of beer-related dehydration.

Researchers in Australia have come up with an ingenious way to allow people to drink beer without getting dehydrated. They’ve essentially made a beer-sports drink hybrid.

These smart-as-shit scientists from Australia’s Griffith University’s health institute say their new beer doesn’t even taste too different from the regular stuff either, which, if true, is incredible. I, however, have my doubts. Why? Well, there’s a reason why their “science beer” is able to hydrate the drinker.

It contains less alcohol.

That could be a deal breaker. I drink beer because it’s crisp and refreshing, but I also drink it to get a buzz.

Of course, reduced alcohol isn’t the only thing that makes the beer rehydrate you. The researchers found a way to add more electrolytes to the beer, which, of course, helps rehydrate you.

Overall, it seems like a pretty cool concept to me. If these Aussies can figure out how to create a similar product without taking some of the actual alcohol out of it, then they might really be on to something.

Researchers at Griffith University’s health institute in Queensland said reducing the alcohol content in beer and adding electrolytes — an ingredient commonly found in sports drinks — could help beer drinkers retain more hydration.

Sounds as if their definition of rehydration is slowed dehydration, not necessarily actual hydration.
