85 Richest People On Earth Are Worth As Much As The Poorest Half Of World’s Population

The richest 85 people on the planet, about the number that could comfortably stand around a cluster of high-roller craps tables in a Vegas casino, have a combined wealth that equals that of the poorest half of the world’s population, according to a study by Oxfam. That’s roughly 3.5 billion people — compared to 85.

The results of the study are long and in-depth, and aggregated by someone smarter than I am. If you want to read all about it, have at it. Here’s a bit of information I found interesting, and in graph form, which is always fun:

The United States leads the way — by a lot — in lopsided wealth distribution. After all, someone has to pay for the, uh, lap dancers for the big guy here.

Not a single one of those other countries has the same immigration problem as us.

You’re kidding, right? France and Sweden have big issues of foreign immigration from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Africa.

I never said that Europe didn’t have problems with immigration. Show me that any one of those european countries has a similar number of immigrants coming in per year.

Do you think our immigration problem explains the ridiculously lopsided distribution of wealth in our country? The massive difference between the worth of people who I would consider extremely rich and the true 1% is staggering and cannot be dismissed as a skewed statistic due to poor immigrants.

“Do you really think the statistic is skewed? The statistic can’t be skewed.” is basically what your saying, which is literally the most retarded argument I have ever heard in my entire life. You have added exactly nothing to the conversation.

I’m a moral guy. I want to live in world full of RFMs so let’s get the ball rolling on this laissez faire libertarianism because then us old money will give to charity. I only drive 6 cars because I have to show these welfare poors how to be a true American, but if there were no rules, I’d surely give more to charity.

The past 30 years saw the biggest advancements in technology since the Industrial Revolution. When there’s advancement there’s the few men who took risks and were rewarded. The fortunes Gates and Buffet pale to the equivalents of Carnegie and Rockefeller in their time (each worth over 300 Billion in today’s dollars). How bad was that for us? We ended up with railroads, cars, a booming economy, concert halls, universities etc. These people are who make America great.

Illogical to compare apples to apples due to circumstance. The later created industry that required tremendous amounts of workers eventually leading to a strong middle class. The former creates jobs for engineer types, which is cool, because I’m one, but does lead to a high wealth distribution, as the study reveals. I know everyone here is FMing hard in the 1% but a reasonable wealth gap is desirable for a nation and her individuals.

well its not just engineering types that benefit from technological progress. I bet Dorn would still be writing dick jokes in bathroom stalls if the Internet didn’t happen.

This chart is a great representation of how stupid all the libtard Barry O lovers are. They think he’s so for the poor, yet the amount of wealth going to the 1% has increased wildly under him.
