Jameis Winston In The Middle Of Bench Clearing Brawl Against Gators

Last night in Jacksonville, tensions erupted in the eighth inning between Florida State and its in-state rival, the Florida Gators, after a controversial play where the Noles’ left fielder, Danny Stewart, ran over the Gators’ reliever, Danny Young, en route to first base. The collision prompted Florida’s first baseman, Zach Powers, to respond with a strong shove into Stewart’s chest. This was enough to provoke both benches to clear, as players and coachers alike flooded the field and rushed toward the first base line.

I’m not aware if the Gators’ 1B has any relation to Kenny.

Although this quarrel didn’t escalate into any real violence, it’s always something special to see a bench-clearer at the ballpark. It’s especially fun in college, because of the stricter NCAA consequences if fights go too far. You have to either be really stupid or have a huge vendetta against someone if you’re going to throw a punch in a college game of any sport–which is a lesson LaGarrette Blount taught us all very well a few years back.

What’s hard to see in the video, because of the angle, is that this year’s Heisman-winning quarterback who also happens to be Florida State’s best option out of the bullpen, was right in the thick of it last night.

Yep, that’s famous Jameis leading the charge, and I can’t say I’m surprised. As we learned from this year’s captivating National Championship run, the redshirt freshman is always ready and willing to stand up for his teammates. Evidently it doesn’t matter whether it’s on the gridiron or the diamond, and we all know Winston is about as fierce a competitor and leader as they come.

Who could forget this speech against Clemson?

The kid knows how to rally the troops, that’s for sure.

Earlier reports stated that Winston had thrown or been the victim of a punch. However, there is no conclusive evidence showing this, and he wasn’t among the three players suspended from the game. It’s doubtful there will be any reprimand for him, as he was only following suit with every player and coach involved in the game. It’s nice to see the youngster stand his ground, too.

The Gators went on to upset the no. 1 ranked Seminoles for the second time in a week, 4 to 1. It’s unlikely either of the teams will forget this altercation when they get together again for a three-game series in Tallahassee, Fla., on April 8.
