167 People Won Money After Betting That Luis Suarez Would Bite Someone At The World Cup

There are some bite bets that you take and some that you don’t. For example, one bite bet that I would never take would be one involving my latest slam, Jersette. Not because she doesn’t have violent tendencies–she does–but because she doesn’t have any teeth. It sucks when she beats the shit out of me for putting the television volume on an odd number, but I stay with her because the gumjobs are phenomenal.

One bite bet that I actually might have taken, however, was one that 167 people cashed in on–a bet at 175-1 odds that Uruguay striker Luis Suarez would bite somebody during this year’s World Cup. If you missed it, here’s the bite heard ’round the world.

One such winner of this prop bet was a Norwegian man named Thomas Syversen. Here’s his winning electronic ticket.

From ESPN:

“I had 32 [Norwegian] krone on it, so it was just for fun,” Syversen told ESPN.com.

When Suarez took the apparent bite in the 79th minute, Syversen said he was awoken by a friend who texted him what had just happened.

Sure enough, Syversen checked and the equivalent of $916 (673 euros) was deposited into his account for winning the bet.

Andreas Bardun, sportsbook manager for gambling site Betsson, where Syversen placed his bet, said 167 gamblers placed bets on the prop.

Considering Luis Suarez has bitten two players during games in the past and has also received a red card for the handball that saved an obvious goal at the 2010 World Cup, it doesn’t seem too unlikely that he’d do something exactly like this. I was actually going to take this bet, but Jersette said she’d beat me up, so I couldn’t. Oh well.

When they’re not flopping around the field like a fish they’re biting each other

I think this is the most ridiculous and hilarious thing in sports in years. A guy is running around on the field, biting other players. Multiple times. Holy fucking shit, yes.

The guy is fucking crazy. In the last 4 years he has denied Gahna of a world cup semi-final by playing goalie, bitten three people during a game, and racially abused a guy.

but my god can he play.

This punishment is far to harsh. I agree, their does need to be some disciplinary action involved. Banned from this World Cup at most. But Suarez was just doing everything and anything he could to insure his country was moving on to the round of 16. In my eyes, that is what the World Cup is all about. If it is biting your opponent hoping nobody sees, or blatantly head butting the opposition in the sternum. The real punishment should be for those pillow biters who are “hurt” rolling around on the ground to waste time at the end when they obviously tripped over themselves. Grab a rampion Chiellini and quit whining that your country didn’t make it.
