Jason Dufner Gives Away Putter Midway Through Final Round, Putts With 3-Wood To Finish Last 8 Holes

There are a multitude of reasons to like Jason Dufner. From his unmoved attitude on the golf course, to his childlike fandom for his alma mater, Auburn, to his dime of a wife, Amanda, Dufner is living the American Dream. This past weekend, at the WGC-Bridgestone, Dufner exemplified that first trait of generally not caring.

Dufner, he insisted, with a look of wide-eyed astonishment, gave the putter away on the back nine. In the middle of his round.This sounded like nonsense, but three corroborating references on Twitter compelled a follow-up. After his final-round 77, I tracked Dufner to the locker room, where he sat in a leather chair looking miserable.

“Jason,” I said, “I heard a story that you gave your putter away to a kid yesterday. I wanted to make sure it was true.”

“Yup.”

“Was that on no. 12?”

“Ten.”

I did the math — eight holes. Dufner had always been a bit rough on the greens, but I failed to see how this would help.

“What did you putt with?”

“3-wood.”

You read that right–Dufner gave away his Scotty Cameron putter after bogeying the tenth hole and finished the last eight putting with his 3-wood. From that point forward, he went three over using the wood as a flat stick.

Dufner was clearly out of contention, but knew he’d still get a paycheck regardless of where he finished. He ended up 66th overall out of the field of 72. He was also 70th in putting, so maybe he simply couldn’t stand the sight of his putter. Either way, he made some kid’s weekend and added another story to the legend of his carefree personality.
