The Economist Tells Us Which Cities Are Most Conservative And Most Liberal
Top 10 Most Conservative:
10. Aurora, CO
9. Tulsa, OK
8. Omaha, NE
7. Anaheim, CA
6. Arlington, TX
5. Jacksonville, FL
4. Colorado Springs, CO
3. Virginia Beach, VA
2. Oklahoma City, OK
1. Mesa, AZ
Top 10 Most Liberal:
10. Baltimore, MD
9. Buffalo, NY
8. New York, NY
7. Detroit, MI
6. Minneapolis, MN
5. Boston, MA
4. Oakland, CA
3. Seattle, WA
2. Washington, DC
1. San Francisco, CA
I was fully expecting Austin, home to TFM Headquarters, to land squarely in the top 10 of the most liberal cities. We come in at 14. We’ll call it a win. San Francisco at number one shouldn’t surprise anyone. Seattle, Boston, and New York definitely belong, as well. Detroit surprises me, however. That’s a lunch pail town, or at least it used to be.
The chart from The Economist is below. It only includes cities with a population of at least 250,000. Find your city and begin arguing.
The data come from a study appearing this month in the American Political Science Review by Chris Warshaw of MIT and Chris Tausanovitch from the University of California at Los Angeles. They brought together seven large-scale surveys that accounted for more than 275,000 people.

San Francisco and Detroit are liberal for very different reasons
10 years ago at 2:59 pmOakland CA as well
10 years ago at 3:19 pmSF and Oakland aren’t even the most liberal cities in the bay. Ever been to Berkeley?
10 years ago at 4:16 pm“It only includes cities with a population of at least 250,000. Find your city and begin arguing.”
10 years ago at 7:02 pmClearly Jonny Hopkins, did not attend Johnny Hopkins…
10 years ago at 9:01 pmHe was blazin’ that shit up with Sloan Kettering
shit. didn’t read that part. laps taken
10 years ago at 5:52 pmThis is odd, Mesa, Arizona is the shit hole of Arizona.
10 years ago at 3:01 pmMesa is full of Mexicans, and 100% of Mexicans are Catholic. It makes perfect sense.
10 years ago at 5:27 pmflawed logic and being a douchebag. you lose.
10 years ago at 5:49 pmActually makes perfect sense, total_gdi. Stereotypes exist for a reason, and it’s not because they’re based on nothing.
10 years ago at 6:45 pmi’m totally not a GDI, though. totally.
10 years ago at 7:20 pmI always thought that every city that wasn’t Phoenix was all witch doctoress hippie shit like Sedona, but today I leaned something new.
10 years ago at 1:25 amBullshit. I live in DC. There are some pansy ass liberals, yes, but overall, we’re a conservative city; and we’ll make you very aware of that.
10 years ago at 3:14 pmIt depends on where you look, 75% of GMU (next to DC) voted for Barry in 2012.
10 years ago at 3:18 pmNah DC is mostly liberals. The successful conservatives moved out to NOVA years ago.
10 years ago at 3:33 pmYou’ve got to be fucking kidding me… Without looking it up, name the last Republican to carry the District. Now name the one before that.
10 years ago at 3:59 pmas a conservative born and raised in proper, you clearly know next to fucking zero about the overall city you thought would be cool to move to after college.
10 years ago at 1:27 am“I was fully expecting Austin, home to TFM Headquarters, to land squarely in the top 10 of the most liberal cities. We come in at 14. We’ll call it a win.” NF.
10 years ago at 3:16 pmIf you ain’t first you’re last.
10 years ago at 3:38 pmI would not call that a win.
10 years ago at 3:41 pmAs in a win for not being in the top 10 so more conservative than they thought, you non comprehending fucks
10 years ago at 3:50 pmIt threw me off too.
10 years ago at 3:57 pmAt least someone is a thinker.
10 years ago at 5:09 pmYou clearly haven’t been to Austin. Outside of the University, its a town of Lib-tard asshats.
10 years ago at 7:06 pmThe fact that only 11 of all the US cities with a population over 250,000 people are more conservative than liberal makes me lose hope
10 years ago at 7:11 pmDetroit is liberal because there are a few handouts being requested there at the moment.
10 years ago at 3:24 pmhttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SPdh7ct0H7s/UehSD_Hd5WI/AAAAAAAAAP4/eYZ–p-ngkU/s1600/detroit.jpg
Interesting that Jacksonville is the only city in the southeast to crack the top 10 for most conservative. Most likely because the rest of the south is on welfare/food stamps.
10 years ago at 3:26 pmPot smoking conservatives in Colorado. TFM.
10 years ago at 3:26 pmyes
10 years ago at 4:10 pmThey’re called Libertarians.
10 years ago at 9:53 pmhow is it that the most liberal city is at a negative one but the most conservative city isn’t even at .5 , the damn liberals are breeding like rabbits
10 years ago at 3:29 pmIt’s because most big cities have decent sized poorer/minority populations which are overwhelmingly going to vote more liberal, while the suburbs will be more conservative. And the study says only cities with at least 250,000 people, so that rules out most of suburbia.
10 years ago at 3:42 pmThe list only takes into account cities with 250,000 population, most conservative places I’ve been in are much smaller cities.
10 years ago at 3:47 pmThe study only covers cities with populations over 250,000. Larger cities tend to be more liberal.
10 years ago at 4:03 pm“The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.”
Jefferson (among others) called this shot over 200 years ago. Freedom is always fighting the uphill battle, and even the most conservative cities are victimized by the “natural progress” he alluded to.
10 years ago at 4:36 pm“liberals”
10 years ago at 6:31 pmThis might catch me some laps, but does anyone think there’s an economic correlation between big market cities being liberal and small-market cities being conservative? These top liberal cities are Democratic strongholds, yet are home to the biggest of businesses that are the bane of Liberal’s existence… Thoughts?
10 years ago at 3:35 pmthoughts are obviously there are more people who would like to live off of other people’s hard work. fuck obama.
10 years ago at 3:40 pmI’m guessing that this has a lot to do with the way people view social issues, such as gay marriage, abortion, and the legalization of pot, rather than pure economic issues that would effect business
10 years ago at 3:45 pmI think it’s just self-segregation. People tend to move wherever they’ll be happy. The (modern) liberal idea of the good life is to live in a walkable urban setting with bike lanes and organic grocery stores nearby, while the conservative idea idea of the good life is to live in a lower-density area where everyone has staked out their own plot of land and lives relatively free from others. So it’s no surprise to see urban centers dominated by liberals and less populated areas primarily conservative.
I’ll also add that Liberals are not necessarily opposed to big business, they just think big business is an ox that needs to be yolked to big government, and that they should mutually reinforce each other (see, e.g. Obama’s bailout of GM & Chrysler, then the cash for clunkers program soon thereafter).
10 years ago at 7:57 pmThis guy fucking gets it. Bravo.
10 years ago at 8:36 amI’ve always found it ironic that the more liberal cities tend to have higher poverty rates.
10 years ago at 3:36 pmIt isn’t irony, it’s cause and correlation or some bullshit like that
10 years ago at 4:44 pm
