Iowa Running Back Scores 11 Touchdowns In One Game, Breaks National High School Record
A week ago on Monday night, a running back at Wayne High School in Corydon, Iowa, accomplished something never before seen in modern American high school football–he scored 11 touchdowns in a single game. While it should be noted that Wayne HS competes in eight-man football, which is commonly reserved for smaller high schools in 23 of the nation’s 50 states, this kid’s unbelievable performance should certainly not be overlooked as anything but extraordinary.
Clayton Kiefer, a 160-pound senior, surpassed the previously standing single game record of 10 touchdowns (jointly held by eight players) on his way to leading his Falcons to a shootout victory against Twin Cedars High School, 86-60. It’s safe to say fans got their money’s worth at this one.
On a night where he amassed 300 yards on 32 carries, Kiefer rushed for 10 of his touchdowns (10, 3, 32, 59, 3, 4, 5, 12, 9, and 22 yards) and put an exclamation point on the record-setting performance with a 71-yard kick return to the house.
His coach, Bart Elliot, was full of nothing but praise.
From the Des Moines Register:
“He’s a really good running back, but last night was something special because we needed him to perform the way he did,” Elliott said. “We couldn’t stop them and we needed to keep our offense going. It was unbelievable how many tackles he broke — long runs, short runs, inside, outside.”
Here are all of Kiefer’s touchdowns, for your viewing pleasure:
That’s a heck of a performance, no matter how many people are on the field.
Elliott and Kiefer both lost track of the running back’s touchdown count during a game that was pushed back to Monday after lightning delays Friday. They were too busy trying to devise a plan to stop Twin Cedars.
“I thought I probably had four or five touchdowns,” said Kiefer, an all-state selection last year whose previous career high was five touchdowns in a game. “I knew we had a good game, but I didn’t know it was that good. I was probably more focused on everything else and defense.”
Losing track of how many touchdowns you’ve scored. TFM.
“If I don’t have my team and my buddies blocking for me, I can’t get there,” Kiefer said. “I’ve got to know it’s not all me, it’s my team too.”
Staying humble and not forgetting why you scored so many touchdowns. RFM..

11 years ago at 3:20 pmIf I wouldn’t have tweaked my hammy senior year I would have had way more touchdowns in a single game. Injuries man…… This article could have been about me.

11 years ago at 4:45 pmBreaking a touchdown in 8 man football is like breaking a scoring record in basketball in a 6 feet and under league
11 years ago at 3:08 pmSo I’m not the only one who noticed the field is only 80 yards long right? I get that it’s 8 man football, but come on…
11 years ago at 11:24 pmThe score was 86-60 (that’s not an uncommon score, either), and you want to make the field bigger and spread things out even more?
11 years ago at 11:29 pmI bet this kid had a three way with his teachers after his game too.

11 years ago at 8:39 pmI’ve never seen such an uncoordinated clusterfuck in all my life. Looks like a rec league game. Side note: there are 50 guys on the bench…why the hell are they playing 8 man football?
11 years ago at 11:39 pmBecause the class you play in is determined by your school’s enrollment, not roster size. The fact that a very small school can get nearly every boy out for football doesn’t mean they play against schools that are 2-3x bigger.
