Oregon Is Getting Some Sweet Throwback Uniforms To Commemorate “The Pick” 20 Years Ago

This Saturday, the Oregon Ducks will take the field in something slightly different than their midnight green, neon yellow, and fluorescent silver, which fans of the Pac-12 powerhouse have recently become accustomed to.

The Ducks plan to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of “The Pick,” a legendary play in Oregon football lore that sealed an enormous upset over a number nine-ranked Washington Huskies team.

For those unfamiliar with “The Pick,” this is how it went down:

The play singlehandedly solidified Kenny Wheaton’s name among the most esteemed in Oregon football history, with that 97-yard interception return leading the Ducks to a 31-20 victory, and ultimately, the Ducks’ first conference title in 37 years.

Some cite the play as the definitive turning point for the Ducks’ program. The school has since competed in bowl games in 17 of the last 19 seasons and secured a .731 winning percentage, which is good enough for best in the Pac-12 over the time span.

As tribute to Wheaton and his teammates on the ’94 squad, the coincidentally number nine-ranked Ducks will fly around the field in these historic, seemingly “Mighty Duck”-inspired uniforms for their showdown with Washington this Saturday night.

Unless the Huskies show up with something unexpectedly spectacular, it seems the heavily favored Ducks team will be celebrating in the same fashion its elders did 20 years ago when the last seconds tick off the clock in this one.

Commemorating the upset of a #9 ranked team when your team is ranked #9 and highly favored is a bold move, we’ll see how it plays out for them.
