Terminally Ill Co-Creator Of “The Simpsons” Is Giving Away His Entire $100 Million Fortune

Sam Simon developed and created “The Simpsons” with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks back in the late 1980s. While Groening is largely considered to be the most important creative force in the show, it was actually Sam Simon who put together the first writers’ room and was responsible for developing the show’s sensibility. And while that alone would be a wonderful legacy — to be a creator of one of America’s most beloved shows — Simon just announced that he is not only a creative genius, but an incredibly generous man, to boot. So generous, in fact, that he is giving away his entire $100 million personal fortune.

Simon was diagnosed with colon cancer back in 2012 and took a 2-year hiatus from the show. Since then, he’s spent his time surrounded by friends and family and recently referred to cancer as “the most amazing experience of my life.” Since he is not actively working on “The Simpsons,” he’s been spending a lot of his time working with various charities and recently decided that he wants to give away more than his time. He then came to the decision to give away his fortune. The bulk of the money will go to three charities: PETA, Save The Children, and Feeding Families.

If this story didn’t inspire you, take a trip over to his Wikipedia page. The dude has lived an incredible life. Some highlights: went to Stanford to play football, then quit the team after a day, managed a boxer to a heavyweight title, won money in the World Series of Poker six times, and then married a Playmate and divorced her 3 weeks later. It sucks that cancer is threatening to take him at the age of 59, but damn it if he hasn’t made the most of those years.
