Arkansas Governor Makes Most Of His Final Days In Office, Pardons Son For Pot Conviction

Outgoing Arkansas governor Mike Beebe is capitalizing on his final days in office, using his power and influence to pardon his own son’s marijuana conviction from 2003.

This blatant abuse of power would be funny if Beebe was trying to be shady and keep it out of the public spectrum, but he isn’t. Beebe is open about his intention to remove the small pot-blemish from his son’s record. He says his son, who is now 34, has learned from his mistakes.

From Politico:

“I would have done it a long time ago if he’d have asked, but he took his sweet time about asking. He was embarrassed. He’s still embarrassed, and frankly, I was embarrassed and his mother was embarrassed,” Beebe told KATV, ABC’s affiliate in Little Rock on Wednesday.

Beebe’s son, Kyle, was charged 11 years ago with possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, with intent to deliver, and he was sentenced to three years probation and fined. He wrote a lengthy pardon application to his father, who probably responded with something like:

“Aw, you didn’t have to do this. This is for normals. You’re a politician’s son.”

Beebe, a Democrat who definitely toked at some point in his life, pardoned more than 700 nonviolent crimes during his tenure as governor, which spans the last eight years.

“Kids when they’re young do stupid stuff. He was no different,” said Beebe, who noted that he’s issued more than 700 pardons during his tenure. “Especially young people with drugs if they’ve straightened up, to get their life back on track and have a second chance, so this is no different. It’s different because it’s my son.”

Beebe is a cool dad.

I spelled it like that because TFM is turning more liberal by the day with censorship and political correctness.

To be fair, Grandex has to censor certain words (shit deemed hateful, racial, or anti-gay) as to not drive away companies from advertising on sites they run. Granted I’m as right wing as they come but I wouldn’t want to put the staff of TFM in a position that could affect their revenue.

can we talk about how you’re still a writer on TFM? Is it a tax benefit to keep you around?

The last Democrat family worth marrying into was the Kennedy’s and they’re dead.

I know Democrats are NF, but I’d like to see more Governors take Beebe’s approach to non-violent drug offenders and not ruin the rest of their lives for one small mistake. Ideally even pass laws that would get rid of the mandatory minimums for some of these offenses.

Stop. That would make too much sense. Politicians can’t handle smart ideas.

I don’t think it’s just a matter of smart ideas. I think most politicians would consider it if it weren’t for the hordes of angry, scared parents thinking legalization/decriminalization would somehow make their sweet, innocent child a giant stoner and fail in life completely. But then again, maybe I give politicians too much credit.

I was speaking in general about TFM’s attitude towards Democrats. I personally don’t judge solely on political affiliation since I’m an independent.

Gotcha. I’m a Democrat, but not a Liberal hippie. Big difference that most people cannot seem to comprehend. Regardless, it’s nice to see another 10%er here with an accurate understanding of political ideologies.

Most people of this site just vote how their parents tell them to.
