Texas Sigma Chi Raises $100,000 For Cancer Research With Their Annual “Fight Night”
It feels great to finally write a story about a successful Greek charity event and not another arrest report. I’ve been on a charitable story dry spell lately, so this is a more-than-adequate slump buster.
The Sigma Chis at the University of Texas held their annual “Fight Night” philanthropy event in which representatives from different campus organizations fight it out for charity. This year there were 11 bouts: 20 different campus organizations had a representative, and 2 Chainz even provided the crowd with some bonus entertainment.
From The Odyssey:
Sigma Chi’s been hosting the event since 1976, with the event’s previous fundraising record set last year at roughly $40,000. The event pits UT students against each other in an amateur boxing tournament at the Sigma Chi house, often on behalf of student organizations. It also features musical performances, with this year’s headliner being 2 Chainz. Fight Night Chairman Derrick Porter attributed this year’s increased success to more support from alumni and donors. “The big spike was due to an increased participation with alumni and a few big donors that decided to step in,” Porter said.
That beats the hell out of our philanthropy events. In fact, I’m fairly certain it sets the bar for nearly every fraternity philanthropy in the nation. If there is someone who can top that, I have yet to hear about them.
The exact amount donated was $100,123.00. That is nothing to scoff at. The boys say they’ll donate the funds to The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation and the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, along with a small amount to two local charities.
Even after such a successful year, Sigma Chi is not content. They hope to build the event to be bigger and better than ever in the future.
Bain said that Sigma Chi is going to try to outdo itself next year, and that he’s just blown away with by year’s success. He said he thinks that Fight Night is so successful because of what a unique experience it brings to Greek fundraising.
Whatever you guys did, you did it right. Congratulations on the success and keep showing Greek life in a good light..
