Let's All Laugh At The Big Ten For Wanting To Keep Freshman Football And Basketball Players From Competing

We laughed at the Big Ten after both Ohio State and Michigan State suffered losses to Virginia Tech and Oregon, respectively, during week two of the football season. We thought they were done. It turned out that they got the last laugh with the Buckeyes rolling to a title and Michigan State rallying for a Cotton Bowl win. Well, we are about to be laughing at them again.

From The Diamondback:

The Big Ten is hoping for support from its member institutions to begin a “national discussion” about ruling freshmen ineligible for football and men’s basketball, according to a document obtained by The Diamondback.

The University Athletic Council met [Thursday afternoon] to discuss a proposal the Big Ten is titling “A Year of Readiness,” which equates to a mandatory redshirt season to examine “the health of the educational experience.”

Is that not the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard in your life? Hell, half of the really good freshmen basketball players are one-and-done guys anyway. That’s why baseball has the best strategy: You either go pro after high school if you’re drafted or you go play college ball for three years before being eligible for the draft (unless you go to JUCO).

Sure, there was a time when freshmen players weren’t allowed to participate, but that was before 1972, when people still believed the wishbone was the best offense. Yes, it’s the Big Ten’s way of trying to put the whole “student” part back into student-athlete — and it might be a way to combat the paying players argument — but you won’t find the SEC, Big 12, Pac-12, or ACC following suit. It’s like the Big Ten wants to make recruiting easier for the rest of the Power Five schools.

If this proposal happens to go through and I’m a recruiter at Texas, Alabama, Oregon, or Florida State, here is what I’m saying to a potential recruit who can make an immediate impact: “You could definitely start at Ohio State or Michigan, but you’ll definitely start here your first year, where we actually let freshmen play because we aren’t full-blown idiots.”

As Cardale Jones once said, “We came here to play football, we ain’t come to play school.”

I do not think we should laugh at them. They just want to get the most out of the talent they recruit while giving athletes a education. Basketball was way more exciting and fun when the best players stayed until their senior year like Bird and Magic

It’s the Big 12 and Pac 12 too. Seems to be hardball move to get the NBA to change the one and done rule.

The. Big ten actually has tradition and history and still values the white man. This is where you don’t understand Midwestern values and their importance on keeping things stable.

Yeah, well, everyone else likes winning National Championships. To each their own I guess.

Did you forget that since 1990 (25 years) they’ve only had 3 National FB Champions? And only had 2 (both OSU) during/after the BCS era? And they’ve only had 1 National Champoinship in basketball since 1990, too. So…no, I didn’t forget. I think they’ve stuck to their values of academics (as they should), and now are trying to create a level playing field in athletics because many other conferences just said “fuck it, we want to win”.

National championships are cool till you move back to the hood with a messed up shoulder and having to sell dope like a high schooler. Degrees are more important

National Championships make schools money. Fast, easy money. Schools have 15-30k other students paying tuition that will get degrees, and hopefully become rich and donate money back to them.

When you already have the money from research and technology it doesn’t even matter dumb ass.

You’re a special kind of stupid aren’t you? Successful FB programs generate over 40 million dollars throughout the season, something most B1G schools have never heard of. They also get millions of dollars for making it too the Playoffs or a Bowl game, and even more from winning said game(s). That’s essentially free money. Every school already pays athletes for scholarships, why not be successful and get a twin on your money? Every school also has a revinue stream of tuition and Gov funding (if not a private school). They’re just pissed they’re trying to uphold their morals and it’s not resulting in a check for their pockets.

You’re a special kind of stupid when you start talking about revenue given the fact that the Big Ten wrote the book on it by giving ESPN a giant middle finger and creating their own TV network. They revolutionized the college broadcasting game and made millions doing it. When they expanded the conference they took Maryland and Rutgers not because they are awesome in any sports, but because they have some of the largest television markets that were available. This sets them up to sign what will be the largest conference TV contract when their current deal expires. Furthermore all revenue from the bowl games is divided evenly between all of the Big Ten schools, so it doesn’t really matter who won the championship because all of the Big Ten profited.

Even though I’m a Purdue fan in the Hoosier state, we love our basketball. None of us can stand it when players leave after a year so I can see how the Big 10 wants to implement the rule

Illinois only had one good player (Mike Dudek) and he was a freshman so I don’t think they’d support this
