I disagree wholeheartedly. They are student athletes, point blank. No one is forcing them to play basketball, they simply choose to do so. Furthermore, whether the sponsors make a billion dollars or a hundred dollars, the players would have the same routine playing the exact same sport, so essentially, the fact that billions are made because of their sport doesn’t even impact them. The whole point of college athletics is to represent the respective universities and give the players a pathway to POSSIBLY make it professionally. Paying the players would be the ruination of college athletics, creating a whole separate professional league. Boo Fuckin’ Hoo.
It’s not just being paid or not paid you fuckbag. It’s also a matter that the NCAA comes down like fucking Thor’s hammer if a booster gives a hungry kid a sandwich (since as a collegiate athlete they almost certainly don’t have time for part-time jobs). Or when a coach puts a kid on a plane to go to his parent’s freaking funeral.
If you go back and read my comment, you’ll see that I only commented on the idea of paying athletes. I actually in no way support the NCAA as a whole. There needs to be an overhaul on many of the major policies, but I still contend that paying them is absurd.
They’re acting on rational self interest. Last year the University of Alabama reported $143.3 Million in athletic revenue… more than all 30 NHL teams and 25 of the 30 NBA teams. The average division I college football player spends 43 hours on the sport… and morons like you think that a “full ride” is adequate pay for these students. You could easily make the case that they’re the most exploited grouping in the United States. The most scarce and highly skilled of all skilled labor in the market and they get paid peanuts. Can’t even sell their own merchandise without getting disowned and disaffiliated, meanwhile everyone above them is making millions off of them.
What they’re saying is that if they happen to get hurt, that scholarship is gone. So they can either continue to get an education and pay out of their assholes, or drop out.
Another really fucked up aspect of the NCAA that doesn’t get that much attention, it’s that even walk-ins who are recurve no scholarships from their school still can not receive benefits or even have a part-time job.
Reminds me of a certain Week where certain aquatic participants supply the bulk of the entertainment but are not compensated….
