A List Of The Most Popular College Football Teams To Non-Alumni Fans

Notre Dame
Kickoff for the 2015 college football season is less than 100 days away, which means it’s time to start propagating useless facts that make your school look good, while shitting on your friends’ schools at the same time.

“Did you know Louisville had the second most players drafted this year? Including his players at Texas, Charlie Strong is basically an NFL talent-creating wizard! Kevin Sumlin isn’t even in the same category.”

Sound like fun? Well, the guys over at SB Nation are providing ammo for your school popularity battles. With help from Facebook, they created graphs to show which colleges have the most non-alumni fans on social media and are most popular to the general public. Of course, this methodology isn’t perfect, as explained here:

What percentage of those who “Like” each team’s biggest official athletics Facebook page also list themselves as having attended that university? There are obvious imperfections to this methodology, including privacy settings, people who don’t fill out their entire profiles, and some athletic departments simply being better at social media than others.

Via SB Nation, here is the top ten:

The percentage shows the number of alumni who like the page. So, the lower the percentage, the higher the popularity. Conversely, they also found what would be considered the least popular schools. Here is the bottom ten:

A&M comes in hot with over 50% of its social media presence being alumni fans. Even with Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, I guess the Aggie spirit hasn’t quite caught on outside of Houston and College Station.

Biggest surprises on these lists? The only major one in the top list is Northwestern. I guess the Wildcats are popular with a lot of Chicago residents?

In the bottom list, six schools listed would not be considered its state’s flagship university, so it isn’t entirely surprising. California and Illinois apparently need to step their social media game up, though. While Iowa State is just happy to be on a list with the word “fans” in it, the Cyclones will no doubt have trouble getting off the list after losing dreamy basketball coach Fred Hoiberg to the Chicago Bulls this week.

You should absolutely file all of this useless information into your college football fan-brain so you can break it out at tailgates this fall. I can’t wait to let everyone around me know how much cooler Texas is than A&M when we are down by 21 to Baylor in the third quarter.

I’m not going to lie and say I’m shocked in the least. Everyone outside of College Station hates us

Sports climate affects that as well. If this same study was done after A&M beat Alabama in 2012, the numbers would look very different. But Manziel moved on and A&M ended up mediocre after an early season run, going 3-5 in SEC play.

As I read somewhere once “a&m is the Kanye West of colleges, only a&m loves a&m”

Forum question: When you go back and visit your school, what restaurants are your must have’s? For me, it was Stubbs BBQ and the Texican. The Texican’s chips and salsa is one of the best hangover cures.

Little Surprised SC isn’t on the top list. I went to a game at the Coliseum and there’s no way any of their ghetto ass fans went there.
