Think You’re A Funny Guy? Good News: You Can Now Major In Comedy

Lots of people think they are funny enough to cut in the comedy world, whether it be acting, stand up, or *cough* writing for the internet. Some are right, and some are, well, wrong. But now there is a college degree that may help those people along.

Starting in Fall 2016, Emerson College in Boston will begin offering a four-year bachelor of fine arts in comedic arts. According to the Boston Business Journal the school describes the program as “grounded in the history and theory of comedy with a concentration of practical, experiential learning and a capstone project, the degree will focus on preparing students for careers in comedy performance, writing, and production.” Even better: The program, via the school’s Los Angeles campus, will offer classes with the Upright Citizens Brigade — where alums include Amy Poehler and Nick Kroll, among others.

Emerson’s program is probably going to be pretty legit, particularly that some big comedy names, like Jay Leno, Denis Leary, and Iliza Shlesinger, went there before this degree even existed. Another Emerson alum, Doug Herzog, president of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group, which includes Comedy Central, thinks the program has potential.

“This is a great moment for Emerson to bring what has become one of our distinctive strengths to the forefront,” Herzog said. “Some schools develop NFL quarterbacks. We develop great comedic talent. With its charged creative and academic atmosphere, no one can deliver what Emerson will to this truly one-of-a-kind program. And that’s no joke.”

And look at it this way — even if you get the degree and then don’t make it as a stand-up comedian, girls always want to bang the funniest guy in the room, right? And you now can have a diploma that says that’s you..
