Gio Gonzalez Becomes First Athlete To Get His Beard Sponsored
Beards have been scientifically proven to act as magnets for the ladies. I don’t have the research currently to back that up, but just accept it. The power that emanates from a beard wearer separates those from the clean-shaven realm. All the great men had one.
Gio Gonzalez knows the importance of a strong beard, and is now cashing in on his scruff. He recently signed a four-month sponsorship deal with Wahl, becoming the first athlete ever to have his beard sponsored.
From Washington Post:
When Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez takes the mound for his next start, he’ll do so as the first athlete with a sponsored beard.
Men’s grooming tool manufacturer Wahl announced the unprecedented four-month deal Tuesday at the National Press Club, where Gonzalez received a certificate of achievement for “facial hair excellence,” a T-shirt and a complimentary trim.
I wonder what Brian Wilson, who arguably had the greatest beard in the MLB, will have to say about this.
So what exactly does a beard sponsorship entail? Well, besides Gio acquiring currency (and disregarding females), he has a few terms he must uphold, as well.
According to the terms of his sponsorship deal, Gonzalez agrees to keep his beard well-groomed and conditioned. Any reference to his beard must be preceded by “sponsored, or brought to you, by Wahl.”
If I’m a reporter, I’m going out of my way to ask him how his beard helped his performance on the mound. Gio will be the first to credit his beard, too.
“It’s something about the beard just brings out the animal, the beast inside,” he said. “You feel like you’re unstoppable.”
That’s because you are unstoppable with one, Gio.
Gio loves his sponsorships.
