New Study Ranks 20 Most Patriotic States In The Country, New York Comes In Dead Last

A new study released this week ranked the 20 best states in the nation, according to their levels of patriotism.

WalletHub, the financial resource company that conducted the survey, used voting habits, military engagement, and civic education to determine its rankings.

Below are the results, via WTOP:

1. Virginia
2. Washington
3. Colorado
4. Idaho
5. Alaska
6. Maine
7. North Carolina
8. New Hampshire
9. South Carolina
10. Georgia
11. Missouri
12. Montana
13. Alabama
14. Florida
15. Oregon
16. Nebraska
17. Ohio
18. Maryland
19. Wyoming
20. Wisconsin

In the U.S., the Fourth of July means cookouts with hot dogs and coolers full of beer. It’s a day off to bask in the country’s independence.

Tell that to the folks of Virginia. They’re pretty patriotic, says a new study.

[…]

Washington, Colorado, Idaho and Alaska round out the top five, the data show.

“Good patriots are engaged citizens who know their country’s history, follow its involvement in current events, and devote time and energy to its success,” Lydia Moland, an associate professor of philosophy at Colby College who participated in the study, said in a news release.

Virginia ranks third in military engagement and fifth in civic engagement, according to the WalletHub analysis. The commonwealth has the fourth most veterans per capita.

Conversely, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York ranked last in overall patriotism. New York, in particular, had a low rate of veterans per capita, and a low percentage of residents who voted in the recent presidential election.

The northeast isn’t patriotic? Say it ain’t so.

I’d say the biggest surprises on this list are Alaska, Maine, and Florida. Nothing against those states, but when I think of flag-flying America, my first thought isn’t of the rowdy patriots parading down the streets of Anchorage. I think of states like Ohio. Depressing municipalities in the heart of the rust-belt? That’s my America. That’s American as hell.

Also, Nebraska making the list is cute. Good for those Cornhuskers for having so much pride in this country, but that feeling only goes way. I’m more of an Iowa man myself.

As a Texas resident for over 15 years, I’m not entirely surprised Texas was omitted from the list. These Texans have a shitload of pride — for the state of Texas. To native Texans, America is just an inconsequential federal overlord that burdens them with unnecessary taxes and laws. Most Texans rarely leave the state, except to go on vacation in Colorado once a year.

And where the hell is Massachusetts? That state was filled with the actual patriots of this nation, and 200 years later they can’t crack the top 20? Pathetic.

We are number 1 because we are so close to DC. Also Steve, slight improvement from yesterday’s article, but you still suck at writing.

I think he could have found a better cover photo. Honestly like a 7, a 6, and another 6 form left to right. They would be lower if it wasn’t for the beautiful bikinis they’re wearing.

I was going to say 7, 8 and 3 from left to right. Unfortunately, the hottest girls are not taking enough landscape photos.

Thee one in middle needs to go on a run, and the one on the right is definitely a butter face.

They’re all below a 7… but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t sleep with either of them after a bottle of jack

You’d be lying if you said you wouldn’t sleep with either of them, period. The bottle would only increase their disappointment exponentially. But, yes, butterface on right.

Missouri is still represented on the flag though. It was a split state, but the majority of the citizens fought for the Confederacy. So Southerners tend to count them and Kentucky as Confederate States

Which I think proves a point, but I’m kind of sad that my home state isn’t on here there’s loads of fine patriots here in Oklahoma

Hold on some of those states contain a bunch of confederate flags, I thought they were the least patriotic?

One big problem is the defination of patriotic. I think the only good indicator is how many vets are those states. Many Americans condemn people for being unpatriotic for doing things that are actually very patriotic. Take protests. Protesters are often times attacked for hating America but it is the opposite. Un-like communist Russia we have the right to stand up and say something if we dont like what the government is doing. Not using our right to protest means we dont give a shit about our country and is actually un patroitic and communist like. Communist Russians were taught to never question their government and essentially be a slave to state. If they didnt like the system they were shamed and cast out. Dissention may feel unpatriotic, but thats not true as it shows you give a shit about the well being of the country

Sort of. The Russians would be protesting government-sanctioned genocide and the like, Americans protest “Wall Street Wealth”, latent criminals getting shot or killed and the confederate flag.

List isn’t surprising. Poor people are always the most patriotic/nationalistic and if you don’t believe me, check out all the peasant ultra-right wingers in Europe. Fight me, rednecks.

Considering Washington, Colorado, and Maine appeared in the top 6, I’d say your poor people logic might be flawed there sport.

Patriotism breeds nationalism; racism; discrimination and prejudice and just overall hatred. You really shouldn’t take pride in that.

No, pussy shitforbrains spewing nonsense in the comment section of sites like TFM and then getting all offended and making blanket statements about someone they don’t know from Adam are what’s wrong with this country. Kindly fuck off.

It’s a dude trolling feminism and liberalism in the most obnoxious way possible. If you want it to go away, stop feeding it.

How minnesota isn’t on the list is beyond me. It’s called the land of 10,000 lakes and just about every single one is packed on the fourth and the parties are even better. There’s no where better to party on the fourth than someone’s million dollar lake home.

Can’t agree with this. I was stationed in Hawaii in the army and can tell you the residents are hands down the least patriotic people in America. They hate the military presence there and most of the tourists are Asians. Bristol, Rhode Island however holds one of the biggest fourth of July celebrations in the country.
