Fresno State AGR Suspended For Hazing, Nationals Calls Bullshit And Defends Them
The Fresno State chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho has been suspended for two years due to hazing allegations, but the national organization has the brothers’ backs.
AGR, a national agricultural fraternity, was found guilty of hazing and serving alcohol to minors during recruitment and initiation in spring 2015. The investigation was launched in March after the university received complaints about noise and property damage caused by firearm use.
But AGR nationals, who investigated the allegations in conjunction with the university, believe that the brothers are getting unfairly boned. In a letter sent to the chapter, nationals say that they believe the suspension is unfair, and that the university “did not complete their investigation and findings consistent with appropriate due process.”
Usually when a fraternity is accused of hazing, nationals will drop a chapter like a bad habit. Just throw them under a bus and cut ties to save face. They have a business to run, after all.
AGR Nationals’ decision to stand by the chapter in wake of the allegations is a testament to the national organization’s genuine compassion for the men in their brotherhood, as well as how soft the allegations must have been. I also find it fucked up that firearm-based property damage and noise complaints led to a hazing investigation. “Well, these farm boys like to shoot guns, so they must be savagely beating their pledges, too.”
A two-year suspension will be detrimental to the chapter. That’s two classes of brothers that will be leaving with no new members to fill their shoes. Thankfully, by the grace of AGR nationals, the chapter will still be here when the suspension is lifted..

10 years ago at 4:52 pmLegitimate question, how does this work? What’s the process for this?
10 years ago at 12:52 pmWe have two chapters at my campus in this situation. Basically, their nationals don’t agree with the severity of the chapter’s punishments, so the chapter doesn’t lose their charter, but is not recognized by the university. This means that the chapter cannot call themselves (in this AGR case) “Fresno State Alpha Gamma Rho”, they will call themselves “Alpha Gamma Rho – Fresno, CA” or something along those lines. Also worth mentioning is that many Panhellenic Councils have bylaws preventing their members from holding social events with the unrecognized fraternities, so their social calendar is extremely limited.
