Put A Fork In The SEC, They Done

For seven straight years, from 2006-2012, we watched the Southeastern Conference win every BCS National Championship game. And for seven straight years, the SEC bandwagon has grown stronger in size and voice. You couldn’t talk college football without an SEC fan throwing in some statement about how dominant their conference was. “We win all the national championships,” they’d say. And when you asked them what team they rooted for specifically, they’d let you know that they were a Vol fan, or a UGA fan, or even worse, a Vandy fan. When you informed them that their team hasn’t won a title in those seven years, they’d just start thumping their SEC chests. That’s what they are wired to do.

But the fact of the matter is that the SEC has peaked. They haven’t won in two years. Their prized team, Alabama, was supposed to run through the overrated squad from Columbus, who had no business being in the playoff over TCU or Baylor, but instead, that Buckeye team ran through Bama’s defense like a hot knife through butter. Bama just didn’t look like Bama anymore. TCU crushed the second best team in the SEC in last year’s Peach Bowl. Georgia Tech made quick work of the next best team in the SEC.

Despite Bama looking for an identity, AP voters named them as the 3rd best team in the country in their preseason poll. In fact, a whopping eight SEC teams were voted into the AP’s preseason top 25. Of those eight teams, four are no longer in the rankings. An early favorite to represent the SEC in the playoff, Auburn, nearly lost to an FCS school and looks like an absolute dumpster fire. Tennessee and Arkansas are trash. Missouri doesn’t look good, and Georgia still has that one terrible loss still left to lose.

Six SEC teams still are in the poll, with LSU leading the way. However, wouldn’t it be fair to say that some of these teams are a little overrated given their schedules? A&M jumped into the top 25 after beating a bad, and ranked, Arizona State squad before barely beating a bad Arkansas team. Ole Miss jumped all the way to 2 after beating Bama, but hasn’t played anyone else besides UF. Hell, look at Florida. They are ranked 11th and have beaten New Mexico State, East Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ole Miss.

As it stands today, six teams (Ohio State, TCU, Baylor, Michigan State, Clemson, and Utah) sit ahead of an SEC team in the AP rankings. Let’s give that a little perspective, here. Should the champion in the four other Power Five conferences not named the SEC go undefeated, then you HAVE to put them in the top 4, assuming the SEC champ has one loss — I’m not including the chance that Iowa or Oklahoma State go undefeated because they are pretty overrated as well. How could a playoff committee be sitting there after the season is over looking at a 12-0 Sparty/Buckeye, 12-0 TCU/Baylor/OU, 12-0 Utah, and 12-0 Clemson, and think “Yeah, let’s throw in this one-loss SEC champ.” Let that sink in, SEC fans. Your hopes and dreams could rely on LSU, A&M, or Florida going undefeated.

Make no mistake about it, there is still some good football being played in the SEC, but to say they are dominant is no longer true. I think it’s time that we stopped clamoring over how great they are and judge the conference based on the on-field play of individual teams. There is a high probability that we see a playoff without an SEC team this season. Have the mighty fallen? Only time will tell, but all signs are pointing to yes.

The BCS created a system that overrated the SEC for years. You detailed it on the small scale in the article, but basically it would rank a ton of SEC teams in the preseason poll, then when those teams lost to their ranked SEC rivals, they wouldn’t get dropped at all. Then when unranked SEC schools beat those same teams, they would get bumped into the rankings. The good news is that the BCS is over, and we saw last year how great the playoff is. Not to mention, more games=more beer.

You forgot to mention that between 2006 and 2012, the SEC representative kicked the teeth in of whatever non-SEC school they played in the natty. Oh, and the SEC had the best overall record against P5 competition compared to every other conference. But don’t let my facts get in the way of your argument.

It’s funny though because a couple of those years, the SEC was playing itself in the title game. Not to mention that the SEC rarely comes up north to play the BIG10 schools. It’s always at a neutral location which happens to be in the south, or in the SEC school’s home stadium. Also, come up north in November, and see how it goes.

It’s funnier because in only one of those years did the SEC play itself. I can tell you’re mad so I’ll continue: The cold, boring north doesn’t have the marketing appeal of the stadiums down south (re: Jerry’s World), hence why these neutral games are played where they are. Take your scheduling bullshit up with the leagues. I won’t cater toward your stupidity by jumping into that. And feel free to come down South in November. It’s usually a chilly 60 degrees and the girls are still more attractive than the dogs you people trot out.

Honestly, MSU has played Western Michigan, Central Michigan, a 2-2 Oregon, the Air Force Academy, and a Purdue team that they almost lost to.

Purdue also lost to VT which is laughable. Tech has been on a serious decline the past few years…

To be fair, VT beat the Buckeyes last year. I realize Ohio State was dealing with some QB shit, and I am also not comparing Purdue to the Buckeyes. What I am saying is that shit happens.

As a Purdue student, I’m just amazed my football team is being mention in a thread about college football. It’s a big step for us

Funny how Florida fans think they are good after beating one good team and beating a couple of scrubs

Bama also lost to Ole Miss last year and still went #1 into the playoffs…

Michigan State and Ohio State play each other..So how about you actually know what the fuck youre talking about before you write an article. As a State fan since birth(currently attending Mizzou), they’re overrated and wont go undefeated so lets take them out of the picture..as for “putting our(SEC) hopes” in LSU, Florida, and TAMU…that doesn’t sound half bad..LSU has a top 10 defense and a top 10 run offense. Florida has one of the most talented defenses in the country and can shut down a top 10 offense in the country. TAMU is a fraud and will be exposed by Bama and or LSU..but seriously, do some research and know what you’re talking about before you post, is the SEC as dominant as before? Maybe not..but insinuating we are “done” being an elite conference is asinine…Take a lap

This website has become such shit I’m done. The SEC is the best conference in college football hands down. Where is the most NFL talent? Where are the most national championships? Please send your garbage ass Big Ten teams down here and play in the land of cotton. Oh wait Ohio State only plays garbage after garbage every single week, so why play in a real conference?

No way the SEC conference champ doesn’t make the playoffs. The system is set up so that there’s no way this won’t happen.

Okay Harrison, Texas A&M is undefeated. Arizona State was bad? They just beat #7 UCLA this last weekend, didn’t they? Bottom line is, it’s week 5. You can’t win them all, and just because the SEC hasn’t won the championship in two seasons, doesn’t mean they didn’t play in it. Auburn played FSU in 2013, and Alabama was in the playoffs last season. Shut your trap, pal. You’re probably a Toledo fan, happy Arkansas choked for your 3rd tier team.

Let’s also take it easy on Florida. They just beat what is perhaps the most talented team between the SEC and Big12 combined.

As an ASU fan we suck ass this year. USC absolutely donkey punched us in the scrotum and we had a tough time getting past an FCS School in week two and New Fucking Mexico gave us a game in what was supposed to be a bangout. Not really sure how many steroids and/or drugs they took to beat UCLA. My guess is that the whole team took a bunch of speed before and at halftime. Although if we beat Oregon in two weeks I may reconsider my statements.

I think you forget that this past weekend both Ohio State and MSU both almost lost (to Purdue and Indiana). TCU should have lost to Texas Tech and got played close by Minnesota and SMU. Clemson hasn’t had any tough opponents except for Notre Dame. Really the only two teams that deserve to be up there are Baylor and Utah.

LSU, Florida, and A&M are ranked in the top 10 because they’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing; win games against “ranked” opponents. How is that overrated?

This is going to make you mad because I have no evidence or facts to back up my argument, but everyone from A&M should go fuck themselves

Obviously there won’t be two undefeated big 10 teams, because of the chAmpionship game. The Buckeyes also play the Spartans so that won’t happen anyway.

In the past four recruiting classes SEC teams have combined for 21 top ten classes. The ACC and Big 10 are the next closest with 6. The best players are still in the SEC and it will show as the season goes on

To be a successful coach you have to recruit, develop, and win. Butch is only great at one of those things. Plus UTs two top 5 classes are all still underclassmen

Once the season starts recruiting doesn’t count for squat. For example, Alabama has had some of the best ranked recruiting classes in all of college football. Yet fans claim the reason they are having a tough year is they don’t have a good quarterback. But if you look at their roster they have two 5-star ranked quarterback recruits on the team. Presumably the reason Alabama is struggling with their quarterback position is the recruits they signed were overrated. Overrated. That seems to be the theme.
