Bulls Guard Jimmy Butler Removes Rearview Mirror From His Car So He “Can’t Look Back”
Things are going good for Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler. Damn good. Like, earned a $95 million contract, made the All-Star team, and won Most Improved Player last year good. And as anyone who’s ever been tasked with giving some sort of motivational speech will tell you, from Little League coaches to hall of fame inductees, the key to maintaining such a high level of success is to never look back.
To make sure that he never looks back again, Butler removed the rearview mirror on his car. Possibly out of raw dedication. Possibly due to a fundamental misunderstanding of the term “metaphor.”
From Yahoo Finance:
In a profile by Chicago Magazine’s Bryan Smith, Butler said he wants to put his past behind him so much that he removed the rearview mirror from his car so that he can’t look back.
Questions about driving safety aside, Butler actually has some pretty good reasoning.
“It’s because I don’t ever want that to define me,” he told Smith. “I hated it whenever it came up because that’s all anybody ever wanted to talk about. Like, that hasn’t gotten me to where I am today. I’m a great basketball player because of my work. I’m a good basketball player because of the people I have around me. And if I continue to be stuck in the past, then I won’t get any better. I won’t change, I’ll get stuck as that kid.”
Later this season, Butler plans on having his shoulder surgically removed to prevent getting a chip on it. He’ll also take several doses of Viagra before he leaves the house, a personal reminder to “Go hard or go home.”.
