Lambda Chi Alpha Nationals Resign From The North American Interfraternity Conference
After 106 years as a member of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), Lambda Chi Alpha has severed ties with the association. The fraternity’s Board of Directors passed a vote to resign its membership this morning citing ideological differences with the new direction the NIC is taking as the reason.
From Lambda Chi:
“For more than a century, we have supported the NIC’s efforts and advocated for its stated principles and values,” said Fletcher McElreath, chairman of the Board, Lambda Chi Alpha. “Unfortunately, the NIC has recently elected to pursue counterproductive tactics that we believe are antithetical to our values and we cannot support them.”
Recently, the NIC has been struggling from internal governance dysfunction that has led to in-fighting and the development of factions that are a distraction from the pursuit of the NIC’s mission.
“We face many challenges in the Greek system today and this internal squabbling has rendered the NIC increasingly paralyzed in its efforts,” said Bill Farkas, chief executive officer, Lambda Chi Alpha
Lambda Chi Alpha prides itself on being an organization that meets or exceeds all NIC standards and the fraternity will continue to hold its chapters and members accountable to standards that are equal to or greater than those advanced by the NIC.
“Lambda Chi Alpha will continue to pursue the development of strong co-curricular partnerships with our host institutions across North America and to promote an environment where all like-minded Greek organizations can be successful,” Farkas said. “Unfortunately, we will do so outside the umbrella of the NIC, unless or until, we are convinced that the NIC’s policies and values are consistent with ours and consistent with the best interests of our campus communities.”
Lambda Chi joins Phi Delta Theta and Kappa Sigma as the only three major social fraternities to leave NIC (Phi Sigma Kappa left but has since rejoined). Individual chapters of these organizations are still free to join the Interfraternity Conference at their university, and most if not all charters still recognized by their schools undoubtedly have a seat in IFC at their institution strictly to not face issues with PAN sororities.
Nationals can do this without much repercussion, but, unfortunately, if your chapter was to do the same with the local “Super Friends” of Greek life, you’d be severely limiting yourself with what you can “permissibly” get away with and the girls that associate themselves with your organization would have to do so on the down-low.

I can’t think of anything the NIC has done besides collect money. Fuck ’em.
11 years ago at 11:39 amExactly. NIC = the federal government. Fuck ’em.

11 years ago at 11:43 amWhy don’t you go outside and play hide and go fuck yourself.
11 years ago at 4:47 pmThats such a beautiful comment xD
11 years ago at 6:00 pmXD is NF
10 years ago at 2:09 pmMeanwhile, university administrators everywhere have begun scrambling to find legal clauses in their university bylaws to stop recognizing LXA chapters on their campuses.
11 years ago at 11:43 amThey aren’t gonna find any reason. You’ll figure out how IFC works when you get to college, scooter.
11 years ago at 6:13 pmDoesn’t mean they aren’t trying. You’ll figure out administrations and how bad the anti-Greek climate can be when you actually get to orientation next August.
11 years ago at 11:44 pmGood move nationals, now lower my fucking dues.
11 years ago at 11:52 amGood is an understatement, this is how we fucking take back America. #WhereMyCountryGone
11 years ago at 6:07 pmI concur with this opinion and sentiment.
11 years ago at 8:08 pm“Lambda Chi Alpha will continue to pursue the development of strong co-curricular partnerships with our host institutions across North America and to promote an environment where all like-minded Greek organizations can be successful,” Farkas said. “Unfortunately, we will do so outside the umbrella of the NIC, unless or until, we are convinced that the NIC’s policies and values are consistent with ours and consistent with the best interests of our campus communities.”
Remember guys, this is LCA. To me it sounds more like nationals just doesn’t want to be bugged about making more goober filled chapters.
11 years ago at 11:59 amOur IFC charges us $2500 per semester so they can set up mandatory anti-hazing workshops for pledges, put us on social probation when chapter cum gpa is below 2.75, and remove girls from the rushing process.
Fuck everything about NIC/IFC.
11 years ago at 12:16 pmYour cum has its own GPA?
11 years ago at 4:13 pmThat’s pretty frat right there.
You want to rush girls?
11 years ago at 5:56 pmIFC=University Fraternity Liability Insurance funded by the fraternities
11 years ago at 10:09 pmMaybe instead of just copy/pasting articles and news TFM can elaborate? Is this a good move? Should other nationals look into this? Why would a fraternity as large as Lambda Chi Alpha make such a move to break away from NIC during a time when fraternities are under such scrutiny? What makes NIC so shitty and why should potentials look into a fraternity that isn’t part of NIC?
Maybe another news outlet will actually cover the topic… Unfortunately they will probably turn it into a bash piece about underlying (read: fake) reasons an organization would remove itself from a sanctioning body.
Go back to posting Rush Tits.
11 years ago at 1:02 pmMaybe you should put some of your critical thinking skills to work instead of waiting to be spoonfed by the TFM writers. Of course this is a smart move by LCA. The NIC is like the federal government controlling us and making us pay for things with little to no benefit… or the NCAA imposing needless restrictions on schools and conferences while not keeping up with modern times. I hope this marks the beginning of a complete disbandment of the NIC.
11 years ago at 1:24 pmDEY TOOK ERRR JERRRRRBBBBSSSS
11 years ago at 2:56 pmWould you rather not have the entire statement from Lambda Chi in the piece? Also I don’t think it’s exactly subtle that I’m not a huge IFC guy.
11 years ago at 2:06 pmSpecifically IFC under NIC/national organization or just in general against IFC? I’d be for IFC if was strictly limited to planning and organizing events with the intention of maximizing participation. No national idiots of course.
11 years ago at 2:37 pmWhat can the NIC really do (or what have they done) besides waste money? In all seriousness
11 years ago at 10:07 pmReally? You look a solid 205.
11 years ago at 11:47 pm“Why would a fraternity as large as Lambda Chi Alpha make such a move to break away from NIC during a time when fraternities are under such scrutiny? ”
Because Lambda Chi believes that NIC’s efforts to lobby on behalf of the Safe Campus Act are part of the problem. Nationals won’t come out and say it, but internally, Lambda Chi nationals have hated the act for a while now, and it’s pretty clear this is what the split is over.
11 years ago at 5:53 pmSolid move by Lambda Chi here. Getting out of NIC was the best thing Kappa Sig and Phi Delt ever did. Put your money to better use and focus your attention on growing your fraternity.
11 years ago at 1:04 pm*growing your fraternity selectively. I’ll never support the “Everyone can be Greek! :D” crap they push.
11 years ago at 2:39 pmAnd if you can’t go Greek go TKE
11 years ago at 2:47 pmFuck tke
11 years ago at 5:59 pmA-B
Very glad to see we’re stepping away. The NIC is pretty much just a fraternity union and it can’t really provide any tangible benefits. Hopefully more organizations follow.
11 years ago at 1:24 pmAnybody else think it’s wierd seeing Sigma spelled all the way out in Kappa Sigma?
11 years ago at 3:17 pmThe only thing weird about it is your inability to fucking spell.
11 years ago at 3:56 pmGoddammit.
