Ohio State Ends Annual Lake Jumping Tradition After Student Dies

Ohio State announced this past week it will move to end the annual Mirror Lake lake-jumping tradition after a student died during the event this year.

The tradition of jumping into Mirror Lake dates back multiple decades, and takes place on the Tuesday before the Michigan-Ohio State game.

From WKYC:

Ohio State University says it will move to end an annual lake jump after a student experienced a fatal medical emergency while participating in the campus tradition.

Late Wednesday, Ohio State identified the man as third-year student Austin Singletary of Dayton.

The event has been held every year before the football game against Michigan.

An Ohio State University statement Wednesday said the tragedy occurred despite efforts to make it safer.

The statement said university leaders agree they will work with the campus community to end the student-led event.

School officials earlier said a man had been pulled from Mirror Lake early Wednesday morning.

OSU President Michael Drake said in a statement that the man was later identified as a student and his family was being contacted.

Columbus police had said the man had a cardiac emergency.

He died later Wednesday at a hospital.

If you haven’t seen it before, here is a video from the 2014 lake jump.

While I admit the tradition sounds fun, this is probably the right call. Even though OSU has always discouraged students to participate, its efforts to make the event safe just might not be enough to keep it around. A few years back, a student was paralyzed after he jumped into the lake. There are numerous OSU students hospitalized every year after jumping into the lake — which has been described as a “vile and disgusting pond.”

Many traditions are worth fighting for, unfortunately, but I’m not sure this is one of them. Thoughts and prayers with the family of Austin Singletary. What a tragic way to go for such a young guy.

This just in: Ohio State students are too dumb to go swimming without someone getting hurt.

Don’t dive head first into a three foot pond how difficult is that to understand.

Sounds to me like natural selection was in full force. That being said, rest in peace.

You have no idea how important this tradition is to students and alumni. As someone who was raised just 20 minutes away from Columbus, i participated many times in the tradition in college. It was so much fun to jump into freezing waters. For all we know, he could of been on drugs, but this is just another knee jerk action from administration (again, just like E. Gordon Gee). Just because one person out of thousands die, does not mean you should punish everyone by taking away this tradition. You can put in your piece that it isn’t worth fighting for, but for Buckeyes, we are just going to keep jumping in the lake anyway.

i don’t understand why i can’t love Ohio State if i didn’t go there… I go to the University of Cincinnati. This doesn’t mean that my childhood team who i rooted for in the good and bad times, doesn’t exist anymore. also, who else would i root for growing up in Columbus? The “quinngf8 university for the deaf and blind”? Just stop.

You go to the University of Cincinnati because you did not get into Ohio State

Or, i would pay 20,000 to go to Ohio State, and 5,000 to go UC…. Eh… These are always what people say when i tell them i root for OSU fans. No doubt that every single person uses these two insults. I wasn’t talking any trash but of course, people feel the need to bring up that i don’t go there. Do you root for any NFL teams? Do you play for that team? then by your logic you can not be a fan of that team.

This is a tragedy, but the tradition shouldn’t be called “unsafe”. Singletary was a third year student here at OSU, he had participated before and he knew the “lake” was shallow. The actions of one student shouldn’t damn a tradition that my father and his father before him took part in.

Tell me, how did your father, and his father before him both participate in a tradition that started in 1990? Assuming your grandfather was at minimum 16 when your father was born, and 18 as a freshman at Ohio State, and then assuming your father was at minimum 16 when you were born, that would make you at minimum 11 years old. Or you just have no idea what you’re talking about.

So with this train of thought, I wonder if OSU is going to ban driving cars on campus if there is one fatal car accident.

This isn’t even like having a car accident though.. It’s like someone going into cardiac arrest while driving then banning driving… Pretty stupid
