Steve Spurrier Gives Final Paycheck Back To The University Of South Carolina

Steve Spurrier has opted to donate his final paycheck back to the University of South Carolina’s booster club, according to multiple news outlets.

Spurrier, who retired from South Carolina on Oct. 12 after it became clear his team was so fucking bad and was not going to get better, has become an icon in the Palmetto state. His personality and attitude were loved by the Gamecocks fanbase, who will now have to adjust to a different type of coach in Will Muschamp.

From The State:

Former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier returned his final payment from the school, a check for more than $70,000, to the Gamecock Club in the form of a donation, a source told The State on Tuesday.

Spurrier resigned in midseason but was paid the rest of his annual salary — about $1 million, which came in large part from apparel supplier Under Armour and radio broadcaster IMG. A total of $225,000 came from public funds.

In a letter to Gamecocks fans that appeared on the front page of The State newspaper this past week, Spurrier wrote that “by resigning, I forfeited the buyout clause in my contract that saved our university three million dollars.”

Spurrier is genuinely a good guy. When I covered sports in the Carolinas, my favorite thing about the guy was how he hosted a coaches clinic for local media members — an extremely condescending way to teach the reporters the Xs and Os of football so they knew what they were talking about if they tried to criticize him.

South Carolina lost a great one, but hopefully his presence will not disappear. He is arguably the greatest college football personality we have today. I hope ESPN carves out some room for him to share his thoughts on the CFB landscape next season. That is a show I would love to watch.

If you covered the sports in the same manner that write you here I completely understand why you know longer are paid for covering sports.

If you retired from this website Holt you’d save them from 3 million hateful comments.

What did I tell you about staying out of The Carolinas, Steve? It’s about time some of us get together and run you out of town on a damn rail.

Too bad the only thing you share with the HBC is your first name. You could use some of his wit and personality

Steve Spurrier is one of the greatest football coaches ever. He may not hold records for national championships or win streaks, but no one has ever had a bad thing to say about him, and I think that speaks worlds about him. If he doesn’t get another coaching job, I’m sure he could outdo the entire ESPN staff with his personality.

Spurrier holds numerous records, has won championships and wins in great streaks. Hell he did two out of three of those things with the South Carolina Gamecocks for god’s sake.

I’d love to see Spurrier vs Holtz commentary. Would be quite the show I believe.
