Apparently The Browns Were Really Clueless About How Much Johnny Manziel Loves To Drink

Johnny Manziel has been named the starter for Sunday’s game against the 49ers, following another season filled with controversy surrounding how much the Heisman-winning Texan loves to party.

On Wednesday, Browns head coach Mike Pettine said the “repercussions would be harsh” if Manziel was caught misbehaving outside the locker room again. Manziel, if you’ll recall, spent part of the last year in rehab trying to curb his extremely evident drinking problem.

From ESPN:

Browns coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday that “repercussions would be harsh” if quarterback Johnny Manziel has another off-field transgression.

“[It’s] hard to put things in a vacuum,” Pettine said. “I don’t want to sit here and say, ‘Look at the degree of discipline.’ It’s hard to say we have a zero-tolerance policy. If something were to occur, I imagine the repercussions would be harsh.”

Pettine also said the Browns basically did not expect JFF to be this much of an off-the-field issue.

Pettine also conceded that the Browns might not have been aware of how “deep-rooted” Manziel’s off-field issues were when they drafted him in the first round in 2014.

“You see the reputation, what was out there,” he said. “I don’t think we anticipated that his problems, his issues, how deep-rooted they were, the extent of it.”

Pettine said if every player with an issue were removed from the draft board, he would be left choosing from five or six players.

“You have to decide how much of this is maturity,” Pettine said. “Is it early in college career? Is it continuing? You do as much as you can.”

Manziel lost the starting job after videos surfaced of him partying at a bar in Austin during his bye week. According to multiple media outlets, Manziel instructed his friends to lie about the video so it would minimize the amount of trouble he would get in. Needless to say, things are getting pretty dicey in Cleveland — with many fans irritated to the point where they believe the organization should just cut ties with him and move on.

It’ll be interesting to see the final four weeks of the season play out. One thing is clear: The guy can ball. Maybe he will be able to change his perception by finishing the year undefeated.

As Jerry Jones would say, winning cures all. Especially in Cleveland.

I said it once and I’ll say it again. Give Manziel a few (or 10) beers before the game, and he will get the ball down the field.

Hope he has another bout with the hard stuff. We could use a new QB here in St. Louis. All the Bud you can drink.

He should show up drunk with Steve Sarkisian’s lawyer and double-dog dare the Browns organization to fire him.

Only thing about this that annoys me is that everyone says he went to “rehab.” He didn’t go to rehab, he went to personal improvement therapy in order to change his lifestyles. He is not an alcoholic, and if he were, there’s no way he would’ve been on the field at all this year. The kid simply likes to party and this is apparently a shock to the media that a college student enjoys drinking. Could he be more professional and mature? Yes, and he should be. But to continuously rag on him for being in rehab and an alcoholic is simply misleading and uncouth.

I’m a big Manziel fan and I’m not going to be an apologist because I do think he has some legitimate maturity issues that idk if he’s gonna overcome, but I do agree that he’s not an alcoholic. Not if you compare his tendencies to that of an actual alcoholic. I just wish he’d grow up, that’s probably a lot to ask out of someone our age who’s enjoying life as much as him.

At this point the issue isn’t whether or not he’s an alcoholic though, it’s the fact that the national media will take any story they can and run with it. In Manziel’s shoes, you know you’re on thin ice with a coach who didn’t want to draft you and you’ve been told by the team that you can’t continue to party like you have been if you want to play. I agree that I don’t think he is an alcoholic, but if he would rather party than be the face of a franchise and make millions of dollars, there is definitely some problem there.
