Young People Want To Send Troops To Fight ISIS But Are Too Scared To Go Themselves

In the wake of multiple terrorist attacks reportedly affiliated with radical jihad, a significant number of young Americans believe the United States should send troops to fight ISIS. They just can’t go themselves because, uh…um, they have a thing that day.
Of the 18-29 demographic, 60 percent believe America should have troops engage with ISIS. An almost equal 62 percent of those Americans also said they were completely unwilling to join the fight.
From NPR:
The institute has asked millennials about the idea of American boots on the ground at three different times this year, and the survey results have fluctuated somewhat, but there seems to be a “hardening of support.”
In this most recent survey, 60 percent of the 18- to 29-year-olds polled say they support committing U.S. combat troops to fight ISIS. But an almost equal number (62 percent) say they wouldn’t want to personally join the fight, even if the U.S. needed additional troops.
The disconnect in joining the fight comes down to how millennials feel about the government writ large, according to Harvard IOP Polling Director John Della Volpe.
“I’m reminded of the significant degree of distrust that this generation has about all things related to government,” said Della Volpe. “And I believe if young people had a better relationship with government … they’d be more open to serving.”
You pansies. If you want to go to war, you’re going to have to get your hands a little dirty.
Would I go to war? Nah. I don’t give a shit about anything, and the profound idea that I would go into battle and die to save our country is extremely disconnected from my reality. Except, maybe aliens. I would probably go to war against aliens. But jihadists? Meh. No thanks. My apathy knows no bounds.
Maybe it is time to reinstitute the draft. Can you imagine a bunch of coffee-sipping millennials getting dragged out of Urban Outfitters and shipped off to boot camp? Can you imagine me getting dragged out of the TFM office and put on the first flight to Syria? That could be something this country needs..

The fact you wouldn’t serve this great country makes you a giant piece of shit
10 years ago at 1:33 pmWhat have you done for this country?
10 years ago at 1:45 pmShut the fuck up. You don’t know him or what he does. Not everyone is called to fight for our fucking country. We need people to be doctors, lawyers, business owners. Not everyone can fucking take off for 2+ years to go serve. I’m sick and tired of people who army-shame, and yes, I’m serious. Who the fuck are you to throw the first stone? Are you a soldier? What do you do? My family is rooted in the navy and army and I will tell you right now that you have no place forcing anyone to feel bad for being called to a different life. My dad served, as did his before him, and even before him. My dad knows I don’t want to serve and he respects that because it’s my decision. Sure, if drafted, I will proudly stand up and be the man my country needs, but that is not the life that I want to live. It’s every individuals choice on how they want to live. Fuck off.
10 years ago at 2:26 pmIt doesnt matter what he has or hasnt done for this country. What matters is that we support those brave men and women who have the balls to defend this great nation and we honor those who have payed the ultimate sacrifice.
10 years ago at 2:28 pmDamn right.
10 years ago at 2:34 pmoh serving in the Navy thats what I have fucking done
10 years ago at 2:50 pmRekt
10 years ago at 3:14 pmHey man, I really appreciate your service. You’re the reason America is how it is. However, just because a lot of us haven’t done what you have done doesn’t mean we wouldn’t. I don’t plan on joining the armed forces, but I damn sure will when America needs it
10 years ago at 11:37 amSorry this is a reply to ABC
10 years ago at 11:38 amWhat a stupid fucking comment.
10 years ago at 4:16 pmSteve you just lost all respect from me, I hope a Bald Eagle eats your black infected liver.
10 years ago at 6:33 pmYou had respect for him in the first place?
10 years ago at 10:11 amat least he’s honest….90% of fraternity members will have their fathers bail them out of the draft if it came to one…..it happened during nam and would again
10 years ago at 11:30 pmWhat mind boggles me is that we have an all volunteer army…but have a monthly quota..
10 years ago at 1:36 pmIf I wasn’t in trouble with the law, then I’d ship today. Kim Jon could be taking a dump on the White House and I still wouldn’t be able to join. Even Tommy’s dad couldn’t get me out of it. Lesson: don’t drink n drive. It’s really not a TFM. Sucks.
10 years ago at 1:40 pmCool story.
10 years ago at 1:41 pmReally? I thought during times of actual war the army took soldiers out of jail to fight.
10 years ago at 1:46 pmIn times of great need yeah they will take those available. Right now however is not considered a time of great need by the military. Currently I probably couldn’t get in either because I have a heart defect and am color blind, not because I’m an idiot like FLICKyou
10 years ago at 2:52 pmAt least for combat situations
10 years ago at 2:54 pmDude congrats you’re a fucking loser
10 years ago at 2:39 pmSteve holt you’re actually a piece of shit I just made fun of you because it’s entertaining but after reading this I really hope you choke on a bag of dicks also don’t ever use the word “meh” by far the gayest thing you could have said
10 years ago at 1:41 pmLet’s assume nearly 100 percent of women don’t wanna go fight which is fine. That means nearly 86% of men this age are willing to go. Not bad but could be better. ISIS sucks a hard one
10 years ago at 1:43 pmI doubt 100% of women said no. They might not be able to be frontline troops, but I’m sure many would enlist in support roles if needed.
10 years ago at 2:21 pmExcept for the fact that all combat roles are now open to women, dolt
10 years ago at 1:11 pmwhich is bullshit. I’d love to see a woman carry my mortar tube across her rucksack.
10 years ago at 10:04 pmAs awful as not wanting to join the army is for millienials, i heard like 75 percent of them can’t even join if they wanted too. With the rise in obesity and the general low test scores most people are unqualified to even enlist. I think this is a much larger issue
10 years ago at 1:44 pmWe’ve got fucking sand negers running around wanting to kill Americans but all left wing pussies want to do is debate gun control and racial sensitivity. FUCK THAT! jumping on the first plane to the Middle East with the brave soldiers of the USA is starting to seem like a much better option
10 years ago at 1:51 pmThen shut your trap and do it already
10 years ago at 4:39 pmTroll
10 years ago at 11:59 pmOur generation (for the most part) has a disease-like false sense of entitlement, we believe that we have a right to everything and that when we don’t get what we want we complain about it like the little shits we are. Yet when it comes to something as honorable and brave as standing up for your country in the name of something we “believe” in, we’re the first to say that we have more imminent things to tend to, like complaining about everything we’re owed. I’d like to say I’m not personally like this, and I’m sure many of you would say the same, but in the grand scheme of things we all are guilty by association because this is our generation too, and we play a part in making it grow some balls.
10 years ago at 1:55 pmWell-executed there Aaron
10 years ago at 2:49 pmWell executed? This pun was definitely intended.
10 years ago at 3:05 pmExecuting well so you don’t have to, just doin my job sir.
10 years ago at 12:00 am“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
10 years ago at 1:58 pmUnless you’ve served your opinion on the military means very little. Especially that age demographic. Also, if you want to become president some sort of service should be required.
10 years ago at 2:02 pmSome of us cannot serve due to medical needs, even though we want to. Just saying.
10 years ago at 3:52 pmYou think that only the citizens who have served in the military can have an opinion on the military? Who do you think pays over half a trillion dollars a year for the military? Our democracy is protected through our military but empowered through the civic actions of its citizens, including veterans you rightly point out as having made indelible contributions to our society as President.
10 years ago at 11:58 pmGet off your high horse you fucker
