College Punter Of The Year Chose Punting Because He’s Fat On The Inside And Hates Running

During last night’s College Football Awards show, Utah’s punter, Tom Hackett, won his second Ray Guy award after finishing fourth in the nation for yards per punt at 47.4. Since it is typical to get an interview with the winner after he’s given the award, ESPN’s Chris Fowler caught up with Tom and asked him about Aussie football players and why he picked punting.

Tom gave a great response.

Punter might be the best position outside of backup QB. You get to claim you’re a starter, you don’t have the pressure of a place kicker, and you don’t have to be the most athletic person on the field. Tom has nailed it down to a science. Good guy to look up to for all those youngsters out there.

Football involves too much running? I think the players in basically any other sport would laugh at that notion.

Me too. And I’m just saying I’m a bit more winded after basketball or soccer than football.

Except the problem with punting is that special teams gets “special” girls

My friend was arguing to me that college punter was the best position during halftime of the Michigan v Michigan St. game…. by full time I had won the argument
