100 Missouri GOP House Members Ask Mizzou To Fire Professor That Bullied Reporters During #ConcernedStudent1950 Protests

It’s been a few months since student protesters at the University of Missouri ousted UM Systems President Tim “Big Bad” Wolfe and ended racism worldwide. Nice job!

While the campus has calmed, 100 Missouri House Republicans haven’t. They want Mizzou communication professor Melissa Click fired (or possibly muscled out of her job).

You may or may not remember Click. If not, she’s the Mizzou faculty member that asked for some “muscle” when the #Concerned1950 protesters turned on the media once they got what they wanted. Here’s a quick refresher at the 7:10 mark:

Click is amazingly still employed at Mizzou. Despite some public backlash and the stripping of a fairly unimportant title with the journalism school, Click didn’t receive any other punishment from the university. Not even a suspension. It’s truly an anomaly.

Now, 100 Missouri house members and 18 members of the Senate Majority Caucus are asking the school to do the right thing and fire her.

A media release sent out Monday summarizes the letter submitted to the MU Board of Curators:

“In the letter, the lawmakers wrote, “As an academic professional, her first goal should have been to promote a safe and stable learning environment for all students, and to represent the University to the public in a way that strengthens the image of our flagship state institution of higher education. Instead, Professor Click’s comments served to inflame an already caustic situation that was clearly out of line.”

The letter focuses on Click’s actions, which include “a complete disregard for the First Amendment rights of reporters” and her assault on a “student videographer by grabbing his camera” and her calling on “those around her to bring in ‘some muscle’ to help remove the reporters.”

Damn, son. When 100+ politicians call for the firing of a university professor, it’s tough to imagine she keeps her job.

On the other hand though, she’s involved in some reallllllly important research, including “50 Shades of Grey readers, the impact of social media in fans’ relationship with Lady Gaga, masculinity and male fans, messages about class and food in reality television programming, and messages about work in children’s television programs.”

Yep. If Mizzou lets her go, how will people know how Lady Gaga interacts with her fans on Twitter. Oh the humanity!!!
