BREAKING: Miami University To Cease Pledge Process After Numerous Pledge Incidents
Update 5:09 p.m.
Statement from the university.
The success of our students is paramount at Miami University. The Greek system is among many co-curricular programs providing leadership opportunities for thousands of students. The university is committed to ensuring both the positive growth of each fraternity and sorority member during their time as a Miami student and, most important, their health and safety. Over the past few weeks we received reports related to the fraternity new-member process that have led to serious concerns, and we are thoroughly investigating all of them.
Miami does not tolerate hazing. Behaviors that endanger the health or safety of others violate the values of our fraternal organizations as well as of the university.
Among steps taken in response to those negative behaviors is that the student-led Interfraternity Council, with full support from Miami University, is requiring chapters to initiate their new members by Friday, Feb. 26. By ending the new-member process for this spring earlier than scheduled, our fraternity community will be able to communicate expectations and monitor behaviors more quickly.
Still no fucking clue what happened, but fraternities must initiate pledges by this Friday now rather than the originally reported Sunday deadline.
Update 4:54 p.m.
Still no word from IFC or an official statement from the university, causing speculation to run rampant and turn this whole ordeal into a clusterfuck of rumors. All we can confirm so far is the mandated end to the spring pledge process.
A flood of emails are coming in from Miami University, all with the same narrative that IFC has sent out a mandate after a presidents meeting that every fraternity on campus must initiate their pledges by Sunday or face a lengthy, multiple-year suspension.
One of those emails is below.
Some news that literally just broke a few hours ago: MIAMI UNIVERSITY HAS MANDATED THAT ALL FRATERNITIES IMMEDIATELY CEASE THE PLEDGING PROCESS. All new pledges must be initiated by Sunday night. Typically the pledge process would last another 5-6 weeks. This is in response to the 27 kids that have been sent to the hospital since the beginning of rush (rush started January 25th), and most recently a pledge being life-flighted and subsequently flat-lining and being revived in the hospital. I can assure the credibility of this as I am currently a student and pledge in a fraternity here on campus. Miami has 30 fraternities, of which 6 of them are suspended/kicked off, and talks of 3 more being suspended are swirling around. Crazy time to be in greek life here at Miami U.
The rumor mill in Oxford is smoking hot with speculation right now. It sounds like Miami is in complete crisis mode.
Evidently, there’s also been a record number of hazing reports this past semester, and multiple tipsters have thrown out allegations of pledges getting waterboarded. Just a crazy time to go to school at “Mother of Fraternities.”
We’re currently awaiting a statement from IFC and we’ll update this story as it develops.

While I’m not a fan of forced initiations, sounds like Miami U has fucked up a lot. Stupidity in any Greek culture effects all of us nationally.
10 years ago at 10:52 amGoing to Miami, this is the first time I’ve heard of a lot of this. Didn’t hear of water boarding, the kid flatlining, nor of that many people going to hospitals. There were mainly 3 fraternities out of 30ish being investigated, and one kid getting airlifted was the last straw. Saw wild rumors two years ago when beta got kicked off for “locking pledges in a room with an alligator”.
10 years ago at 11:22 amDon’t bash on the stupidity of Greek Life if you still don’t know the difference between effect and affect
10 years ago at 3:20 amSigma Chi Alpha Chapter were notorious fucks
10 years ago at 10:45 amIt’s simple. If you don’t join a frat, you won’t get harmed or injured. Fraternities are destroying America. I’m not paying thousands of dollar to make friends, sorry. I can do that for free.
10 years ago at 10:52 amWrong website.
10 years ago at 10:54 amShut up, loser.
10 years ago at 10:55 amSo are you looking for friends here?.. Because you won’t find any.
10 years ago at 10:55 amKindly go fuck yourself in the nearest corner.
10 years ago at 10:56 amWhy don’t you do like a Steve Holt and go fuck yourself. Hearing for a motion to blackball now in session.
10 years ago at 10:56 amOh fuck, you’re “that guy”. Nobody really wants to be that guy.
10 years ago at 11:06 amGood thing you didn’t rush. Doubtful anyone would give you a bid.
10 years ago at 11:12 am“I don’t pay for my friends, I pay for a castle where we throw parties you’re not invited to. TFM.

10 years ago at 12:09 pmSo you haven’t made any friends while paying for college? Besides, Greeks have a LOWER rate of hospitalization compared to you geeds. You’re the fucks ruining America.
10 years ago at 12:18 pmMight want to retake Psych 180 there, champ. Correlation doesn’t mean causation.
10 years ago at 1:50 pm*cant do that for free

*eats alone in the student center
Dan, quit changing your fucking picture. We get it, you lift.
10 years ago at 10:54 amIt’s been a long time coming sadly.. It’s been a rising number of hazing reports everywhere and at a very active and the rich tradition Greek life schools like Miami u.. They’re going to haze.. Gotta be careful.
10 years ago at 11:00 amAlso go to Miami, no one flatlined or was airlifted. It’s a rumour that is spreading on yikyak that has no truth to it.
10 years ago at 11:03 amPeople still use Yik Yak?
10 years ago at 11:12 amThis is not true. It happened last week. I was walking uptown when the LifeFlight helicopter was landing at the hospital, so it is not a rumor. Get your facts straight. All of this wouldn’t happen because of a rumor on YikYak.
10 years ago at 11:12 amA lot of people get sent there on helicopter from car accidents and other incidents. All the fraternities are within a mile of the hospital so why would they even use a helicopter over a ambulance?
10 years ago at 11:22 amSo they could take the pledge to Cincinnati to a hospital that is more equipped to handle the situation… The hospital here in Oxford is a hole.
10 years ago at 11:31 amThat’s fair. Along with them currently renovating the emergency room drop off section currently. Great timing McKillemAndHideEm
10 years ago at 11:50 amThere’s also the UC hospital in West Chester which has a Helicopter which is 100x better than the Oxford Hospital
10 years ago at 2:01 pmSweet, I’ll remember that
10 years ago at 2:38 pmI guess they don’t make them like before. I only had one pledge brother rushed to the hospital and it was because he forgot his insulin. I understand pledging is a very important process, but if you keep sending pledges to the hospital, you are probably doing it wrong.
10 years ago at 11:05 amDamn I’m supposed to be going to Oxford this weekend. Guess this’ll change the tone a bit
10 years ago at 11:11 amwhat this tells me is that a lot of actives involved in the pledge education process have a severe lack of knowledge of how to properly push a person past their physical limits. I believe it would be safe to assume that a lot of these hospitalizations were due to severe dehydration, heat exhaustion, and probably your run of the mill alcohol related issues. If you’re gonna smoke the ever living dogshit out of someone, understand that if you want them to keep on going they will have to replace vital fluids since they’re sweating that shit out. forced hydration sessions in between fuck fuck games helps. this is a personal accountability issue that these guys need to square away and that others should learn from. allowing them to drink water doesn’t make them weak. believe it or not your fraternity house basement isn’t quite the Hanoi Hilton
10 years ago at 11:12 amIt’s simple things. If you have a class of 25 dudes and you make them kill three handles in a row quick, have them all chug a few cases of beer to throw up. They’ll still get hammered, have to go through drinking that shit, and puking, and no one is going to end up holding down all that liquor to the point bad things happen.
10 years ago at 12:23 pmSorry Tony but thats the dumbest fucking advice ive ever heard. Dont haze with liquor period. Its easy to get carried away. Keg stands are a great way to disorient someone without putting excessive amounts of alchohol in their system.
10 years ago at 12:45 pmEh too each their own. We’ve always done it that way and sent zero pledges to the hospital in all my time.
10 years ago at 4:22 pmWhat do you have to do to get 27 pledges sent to the hospital? Also could be the fault of the pledges, we don’t know and frankly the IFC probably knows what we do, wait until all the facts get out before we jump to a conclusion.
10 years ago at 11:29 amYou really had this pop up on my iPhone alerts like when Lebron left Miami? Relax.
