Angry Toronto Writer Hates NHL Shootouts For Some Reason
Hockey Twitter is a great place to find the true lovers of the game. Not the ones who passively watch every April, May, and June. Just guys who get down to the nitty gritty of it all. Fights cause brain issues? Nah, fights are what makes the game great. 3-on-3 overtime? What happened to our 5 best can beat your 5 best in a sudden death overtime period?
Don’t even get me started on shootouts. Just take a look at this tweet from Bruce Arthur, a sports columnist for the Toronto Star.
I actually change the channel when a shootout comes on. It teaches you nothing that matters except the winner.

Oh man. Nailed it. It’s all about the game that ol’ Bruce here remembers where scores were settled mano y mano in an overtime period which could end in a tie. Take this guy back to the days of Mario Lemieux, Gordy Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Peter Forsberg, Mike Modano, Bobby Hull, and Tony Esposito.
In all seriousness, who doesn’t like shootouts when they give you highlights like this?
Cheeky..

9 years ago at 5:32 pmShootouts are fucking stupid.
9 years ago at 7:08 pm-someone who’s had to watch Jimmy Howard in a shootout for the past five horrible years
yea the highlights are cool but from a competitive standpoint its the same as having a home run derby or slam dunk contest to decide the game
9 years ago at 7:38 pmDon’t know why you are being lapped so much. Shootouts are alright occasionally but are really like you said a skills contest that has nothing to actually do with how good of a team they are. I’m sure I’ll be lapped for this comment but it’s the truth.
9 years ago at 9:57 pmGuy’s just mad the NHL playoffs will be Canadian free for the first time since 1970.
9 years ago at 10:05 pmWhile shootouts do make for awesome displays of skill, they contradict the entire game. Hockey is a team sport, yet shootouts force the game to be decided by individual talent. It doesn’t make much sense, but it is entertaining.
