Texas Secessionist Movement Comes Back To Life As “Texit” In The Wake Of The Recent U.K. Decision

The movement for Texas to secede from the United States has gained some attention in recent years, with a petition for its secession gaining a large following in 2013. This debate has been reignited in the wake of Great Britain officially deciding to leave the European Union.

From Fox 7 Austin:

“It is past time that the people of Texas had their say on our continued relationship with the Union and its sprawling Federal bureaucracy,” TNM president Daniel Miller posted on the group’s website. “The win for Brexit opens the door for Texit by establishing, concretely, that it is possible to have an adult conversation on independence and letting the people have the final say.”

Okay, so “Texit” does have a nice ring to it. That may be just about the best thing it has going for it, though. The argument for many is that Texas would be the 12th largest economy in the world if it were independent, so it would do just fine on its own. However, it would not maintain that status for long if it left the U.S. Leaving the United States would be extremely illegal and unpopular with the remaining 49 states, so don’t count on the Republic of Texas being able to trade with the U.S.

That’s okay, because Mexico, the United States’ 3rd largest trade partner, would still be right there to the south, right? They would, but do you honestly think the Republican majority of secessionists would want to have Mexico as one of their primary trading partners? Doesn’t seem likely.

While Texas can’t legally leave the United States, its constitution allows for it to do something interesting; it can split into five states if it wants to. So if Texas wants to split into Panhandle, West Texas, Central Texas, Austin, and Luckenbach, it could possibly do that.

While Texas will probably never secede from the Union, the prospect of building a wall on its northern border is very interesting. Let us know what you guys think about the “Texit” in the comments below.

How about we divide the US in half, pussy liberal GDIs on one side and the conservative people with a brain on the other.

Instead of building a wall on the Mexican border, we build a wall on the Californian border and keep on the liberals in there

If I had 3 nukes I’d drop one on the San Andreas Fault to get California off our back, another to destroy the Middle East, and the last one on Hiroshima to show that I’m not sorry.

The Sam Andreas fault is a converging fault. If there’s a quake it will just shake, not rip California off of the U.S. Also, you’re such a tryhard

I think the “Texas Republicans are racists who hate Mexicans” implication is unfounded and idiotic.

As much as it’s implied Texans do not hate Mexico, it’s Arizona that’s bat shit crazy about the border.

I mean, shit, they’re 50% responsible for TexMex food. Can’t hate them specifically for that reason.

With the “political revolution” that is Bernie Sanders, America is going straight downhill. I’m on board with texit not immediately but maybe 10-15 years down the road.

Free trade agreememts and the oil Texas is dependent upon refining for revenue would both be significant problems. Texas would make it, but it would be less awesome than it is now.

As part of the agreement Texas made with America when we entered the union was to be able to secede at anytime, if we so choose. So it’s actually not illegal.

Actually, when we seceded during the civil war and subsequently rejoined the union, we forfeited that right. So it would be illegal now.

Theoretically though, if Texas were to secede, they wouldn’t have to abide by u.s. Law

No, dipshit. Texas does not have that right and it never did. This is an urban legend. Read the Texas constitution.
