New Fraternity RA Looking Forward To Stimulating Professional Opportunity

Smiling amidst a stack of boxes as he unloaded his 2008 Toyota Camry on the sidewalk outside of Beta Gamma Mu, newly hired fraternity RA Derek Johnson was beaming about his future.

“I just graduated with a BA in Academic Administration with a double minor in Leadership and Social Justice, so I’m looking forward to the chance to make a real difference here,” Johnson said. “Plus, the house is so close to campus that I should be able to make it to my grad seminars and part-time job at the Student Success Center no problem.”

Johnson, a recent transplant from a small liberal arts school in upstate New York, was lucky enough to snag his position with BGM, who had been without an RA since the last one voluntarily checked himself into a mental hospital in March.

“Fraternity guys get kind of a bad rap these days,” admitted Johnson. “My mom begged me not to move in here, but I view it as a challenge and an opportunity. I think these guys have an amazing potential to improve and learn, they just need the right person to teach them and foster healthier habits.”

“I’m looking forward to holding a number of workshops in the chapter house,” said Johnson excitedly, flipping through a large notebook. “I want to focus on intercultural sensitivity and reducing rape culture, but if we get a good response from that, I’ll move on to organic food and maybe even addressing ways to moderate alcohol consumption and develop effective study habits.”

Turning toward the house, Johnson put his hands on his hips and took a deep breath.

“It’s going to be a good year. I can feel it.”

When questioned about the new RA, fraternity member Bryce Lockwell shook his head and cracked open a beer.

“Oh yeah, we’re going to destroy that guy.”
