Let’s Peep The Most Egregious Things Baylor’s New Coach Said At Big 12 Media Days

Things just seem to keep spiraling out of control for Baylor University following the sexual assault scandal that led to the firing of Coach Art Briles, the resignation of University President Kenneth Starr, and the conviction of two athletes for rape. Naturally, it has been at the forefront of people’s minds in the midst of Big 12 Media Days. Yesterday, Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby addressed the recurring issue.

Yeah, because when I’m on a bender the first thing I want to do is go out and get to raping. That’s not how this works, Mr. Commissioner. As if those remarks weren’t enough of a fire starter, today, Baylor’s new head coach Jim Grobe took the podium. If what Bowlsby said was gasoline, Grobe broke out the napalm.

Although I’m sure there are plenty of shady things happening in the athletic departments of every school in the country, something tells me that routinely covering up sexual assault by athletes isn’t as common as Grobe thinks it is.

Please, tell us what constitutes a culture of bad behavior then. Is West Virginia secretly sending its athletes on missions to burn down the facilities of conference opponents? Do the Sooners have a secret fight club? If so, they sure as hell aren’t flailing in a national spotlight because of it.

Holy Toledo, where do we begin? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I think this whole situation is well past broke, coach. It’s damn near totaled. As for that recruiting class you want to hit a home run with? You just lost seven quality recruits as a result of this whole mess. Depending on just how far this sinkhole goes, you might be looking for a class elsewhere next year.

I understand that Grobe needs to be a font of optimism for a program that’s in serious jeopardy right now. A lot of people will write off these quotes as part of the job, saying that it’s just another example of having to roll with the punches. In this case, however, those punches aren’t a result of just slipping a player some scratch on the side. They’re from a university’s attempt to keep their athletes’ very serious criminal actions on the DL. I’m sure there are a number of athletes with top notch character on the Baylor football team. Unfortunately, the actions of the university and the athletes at fault are what’s going to reflect back on everyone.

Baylor is a powder keg right now, and it might be time for Grobe, Bowlsby, and the university itself to break out the hoses. Right now, they’re just striking matches..
