AU Sammy Is Being Robbed Of An Awesome “Badminton And Boujee” Philanthropy Shirt Over Fear Of Cultural Appropriation
Sigma Alpha Mu (Sammy) at American University was forced to cancel its spring philanthropy, which was set to raise money for combat veterans with mental health issues, because school administrators believed the name of the event “Badminton and Boujee” could potentially be interpreted as cultural appropriation.
From Campus Reform:
Rocco Cimino, the president of Sigma Alpha Mu, Delta Beta, said the frat was simply trying to think of a catchy and engaging name for a badminton fundraiser, given that the sport is “not exactly the most exciting thing in the world.”
The frat soon received an email from Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life Colin Gerker, who insisted that the name could not be used because it could be considered a form of cultural appropriation.
“I suspect that this event name will be criticized for the use of ‘boujee,’” Gerker asserted. “I know it’s a colloquial term and is popular via Migos, but we have had groups get reamed for appropriating culture before related to situations like this.”
Gerker further explained that the name would have to be changed in order to secure approval for the event, and suggested they avoid any thematic titles that related to “gender, culture, or sexuality.”
Ultimately, Sigma Alpha Mu officially cancelled the event because it did not “have enough time to promote/raise money for the event” without capitulating to Gerker and the University Center on the title.
Badminton and Boujee would have been a fire philanthropy t-shirt. I mean that thing would have been in every brother’s weekly rotation, no questions asked. At any given casual chapter meeting, the room would have been at least a dozen Badminton and Boujee tees deep. Sorority girls would rock the fuck out of ’em — once they cut the classic cleavage triangle into the front first — and give Sammy some solid campus pub. It’s a damn shame. A missed opportunity to do something truly great.
Oh, and the whole troops thing, too. Guess the mental state of our veterans can take a backseat to the theoretical outrage of other white people that probably made a “Black Beatles” mannequin challenge video a few months back.
Rain drop. Drop top. Smoking some fools with the shuttlecocks. That shirt would have been the hottest item on American U’s campus..

I’m sorry, I thought this was American…
9 years ago at 5:47 pmSad truth is that America is becoming full of pussies who can’t take a harmless joke. Thank god for Trump.
9 years ago at 7:10 pmThe whole idea of “cultural appropriation” is just nonsense. These PC Police are fucking insane.

9 years ago at 5:54 pmI didn’t know successful rich hood rapper was a culture
9 years ago at 5:56 pmA quick urban dictionary search would have told Mr. Circle-Gerker that “boujee” simply means high-class.
9 years ago at 5:57 pmMy brother went to AU, it’s touted as the “most liberal college in America” and they’re proud of it. Interpret that as you will
9 years ago at 6:03 pmSo they’re all fucking insane?
9 years ago at 12:33 pmThis is so fucked. Boujee is literally a play on bourgeoisie. French socialists called me a “Bougie American” for wearing Polo two years ago. If anything, Boujee was appropriated from the French.
9 years ago at 6:05 pmI wouldn’t be shocked if rowdy gentleman makes a “badminton and boujee” T- shirt like next week because of this
9 years ago at 6:07 pmThey should. And they should donate to Sammy’s philanthropy through sales of it. Dan? Jared?
9 years ago at 1:02 amHold on…the name of the album is Culture, and the two singles are Bad & Boujee and T-Shirt.
9 years ago at 6:13 pmI smell a conspiracy.
