Josh Gordon Got Drunk And High Before Games
Josh Gordon was basically living his NFL career like a college student in intramurals. Essentially every college student’s weekly routines would mark them as a threat to themselves and society as soon as they receive their diploma and enter the real world. Dipping like it’s your job, drinking four nights a week, and eating what could be considered garbage are all things which we hopefully grow out of by adulthood.
On top of all this, college students, especially fraternity men, have a well warranted admiration for getting completely plastered before intramural games no matter the sport.
While having to give up getting tanked before competing in sporting events is something that most postgrads will never have to come to terms with, Josh Gordon is here to say otherwise.
From CBS Sports:
In a sobering interview with GQ, Gordon admitted that he used to get drunk or high before pretty much every game that he played in during his first three seasons with the Browns.
“I would have these little pre-made shots,” Gordon told GQ. “I used to love Grand Marnier. I could drink it down smooth. I could usually drink a lot of it. But if it wasn’t that, it might be a whiskey or something. And I would drink probably like half a glass, or a couple shots to try and warm my system up, basically. To get the motor running. That’s what I would do for games.”
Gordon said he also liked to smoke weed before games if he could fit into his drug testing schedule.
“I used to make a ritual of it before every game,” Gordon said. “If I had already been drug-tested that week, or the day before the game, I knew I had a couple days to buy to clean my system. Even before I was getting tested for alcohol, prior to my DWI in 2014, I would take the biggest bong rip I could. And try to conceal all the smell off all my clothes.”
The Browns wide receiver also added that he would smoke weed with “a bunch of guys” on the team before each game.
Eventually Gordon’s hard partying ways caught up with him after he was forced to miss 45 games over four NFL seasons. While this is a cautionary tale for pro athletes, I can’t help but feel impressed that Gordon had such a lucrative college and NFL career while remaining absolutely gassed the whole time.
If I threw back eight tequila shots then played even just a full Greek league football game, chances are the following day would consist of me eating Chick-Fil-A and sitting my ass down for a Netflix marathon while nursing a hellish hangover. Gordon, on the other hand, made a career out of heavy drinking and smoking while still putting up numbers on the field. Talk about turning a peak into a plateau.
Recently, Gordon has officially re-signed with the Cleveland Browns, which in and of itself could force anyone to alcoholism. Good luck to Gordon in his comeback. Now let’s see how he “gets the motor running” without the help of Grand Marnier..
