Texas State Has Suspended All Greek Activities Following The Death Of A Phi Kappa Psi Pledge
Matthew Ellis, a Phi Kappa Psi pledge, passed away in his sleep following his fraternity’s initiation on November 12th. Since his death was announced, the school has banned all Greek activities pending a further review of the situation and Texas State Greek Life as a whole.
From The Austin-American Statesman:
“These chapters are prohibited from holding new-member events, chapter meetings, social functions, and philanthropic activities until a thorough review of the Greek affairs system is completed,” [Texas State President] Trauth said.
Ellis is the second Texas State student to die this year after attending an off-campus Greek event. Four Texas state fraternities were handed suspensions in January, ranging from two to five years, for alcohol violations stemming from a party last year in which a 20-year-old student was fatally struck and dragged by a bus near Martindale.
It’s horrific to hear about a person as young as Matthew losing their life in the process of something that should be great moment for them. Authorities have since said that alcohol could have been a factor in his death, but we’re not here to speculate on what might have or might not have happened. This is a tragedy either way, and we’ll have to wait for further details to come to light in order to know what really happened.
We all get caught up in the day-to-day of college life and the nonstop frenzy of activities taking up our schedule, but here’s a chance to reflect on how fragile the lives of us and our friends really are. Please make sure to check up on anybody you run into that may have had too much to drink or isn’t very responsive. Their situation could be far more critical than it seems, and the simple act of checking on them could save their life.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people from Texas State’s Greek community, and to them I offer my warmest condolences..

Phi Psi knew they were getting suspended and even possibly kicked off. Instead of laying low, they decided to continue to break the rules and act like idiots. We are all devastated by the loss of life. We are grieving and sad. At the same time we look forward to Phi Psi finally getting what they deserve. I hope Matthew’s parents come down hard on those involved.
Fuck you Phi Psi for taking a life. And in the process ruining Greek life for the rest of us.
