The University Of Virginia-Rolling Stone Legal Battle Is Finally Over

For the past few years, Phi Kappa Psi at the University of Virginia and Rolling Stone magazine have been in a courtroom standoff. Now, it finally looks like that book’s about to close as the legal battle is coming to an end.

The lawsuit, brought against Rolling Stone by three members of the University of Virginia’s Alpha chapter of Phi Kappa Psi, was “initially dismissed by a federal judge before being revived in September by the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals,” according to Hollywood Reporter.  The parties subsequently “stipulated to dismissal.”
According to the Reporter, per the agreement, “some of the fraternity members become beneficiaries of a settlement whose terms were not provided in court.” The stipulations of the settlement included a confidentiality clause.

For like the two of you still unfamiliar with this saga, Rolling Stone originally published a false report about Phi Kappa Psi brothers gang-raping a woman. As you can imagine, the backlash was immense. The school immediately took action against the fraternity and every anti-Greek life social justice warrior had new ammunition in their fight against fraternities.

But again, the story was found to be completely fictional and those fraternity brothers had the past few years of their lives ruined because the publishing powerhouse magazine reported actual #fakenews.

Even though they were found to be innocent, even false accusations of this nature certainly cause harm to the people involved. That’s why the brothers in question were completely justified in going after the magazine for damages.

Rolling Stone eventually paid nearly $2 million in damages to the fraternity in question, out of $25 million in damages being sought.

I guess 2 milli is the going rate for a 9,000-word slanderous report that drags the reputations of an organization and a university through the mud. I’m just glad we can finally put this disaster to bed..
