Memphis Students Protest After Fraternity Member Performs “N***** in Paris” At Karaoke Charity Event
Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Memphis is in hot water right now after a member of the fraternity performed “Ni***s in Paris” during Pi Beta Phi’s charity karaoke event over the weekend. The song choice was met with immediate backlash and resulted in the member being suspended from the fraternity.
Yikes. Yeah, I’d have to agree, probably not the best song choice. There’s simply no way to show off your range in it. I’m personally more of a “Friends in Low Places” type of guy. I’ve also been known to dip into “Ain’t No Mountain High” if I’m feeling particularly saucey. Both provide ample opportunities to show off your highs and lows.
Still, despite the obvious lack of quality judgment on this fraternity member’s song choice, is choosing “Ni***as in Paris” worthy of a full-blown, campus-wide meltdown? Apparently it is.
Alright, Bella, who is Johnny and can I have his black card? I’m part Mexican, listen to a crapton of rap while at the gym and the club and thoroughly believe Oprah is bae. Lmk.
So, yeah. That’s where we’re at now. And to show I’m being fair, I did find at least one person defending the other side of the debate.
As if you thought the outrage over a lyric of a song would stop there, it actually spilled out onto campus early Monday morning.
Honestly, one of the more offensive things from this entire ordeal is homeboy’s song choice being so damn overdone at this point. It doesn’t quite “getting the people going” like it did back in 2011. You’re willing to risk it all and this is the hill you choose to die on? A track that doesn’t even crack Kanye’s top 50? That’s not how the rap game works, younging. It’s too new to be a classic but too old to be a relevant song selection. Think things through one time for me, kid.
As for redemption, this guy needs to run back another charity event and crush this song with some DGC friends.
Problem solved..

So rappers and black people can say the n word but god forbid the whitey uses it. Protest the artist using it not the people singing it. Fuck liberals
8 years ago at 3:46 pmYou go protest ’em. I’m fine with artists saying whatever they want, I’m personally fine with whomever saying whatever they want, but I’m also fine with an entire culture deciding that a certain word is “theirs” and to be offended if others use it. Whatever.
It’s like flipping the bird, you can flip it to your friends over something little but out of context and to someone you aren’t close with, it’s worse. With this word it’s like that but ampped up all the more. And it’s kind of too late to change: if a black person says “maybe we should all stop saying it” or “maybe everyone can say it if it’s in a positive way” then all of a sudden they are an uncle tom, and if a white person appears to be encroaching on a black privilege like having that word then they are “trying to take everything from (us)”
It’s like asking conservatives to go pro-life. Technically it’d make sense: it’s individual liberty, smaller government, “keep ’em out of my personal life,” let the free market decide etc.”
8 years ago at 7:55 pmBut if you are a conservative and try to suggest it, you’re not conservative anymore.
Just too late to change. Or… too late to NOW start saying “This doesn’t make sense, why are you guys reacting like this”
Try harder you virgin goobers
