Trojan Is Giving Away A Box Of Condoms For Every Shot Blocked In The NCAA Tournament

I’m happy to promote and get on board with this deal because A) I absolutely love the campaign name (Block Party — get it?) and B) being the only “doctor” in the house, I am just generally very pumped about sexual health and reducing community STI epidemics. Look, it’s no secret that STIs are at an all-time high on college campuses. There will be an estimated 20 million new sexually transmitted infections this year according to the CDC, with over 2 million cases of Chlamydia and 468,000 cases of Gonorrhea.

Chlamydia, while serious and contagious, might be just like strep throat of the genitals when it comes to medical treatment. Gonorrhea however, is no laughing matter. That little asshole can vary the presentation of its surface proteins to evade the immune system and will suck up pretty much any pieces of naked DNA floating around to enhance itself in a process called transformation. This all leads to a pathogen that is becoming increasingly antibiotic resistant, as in we are RUNNING OUT of things to treat it with. At some point, it will get to where basically all we can do if you have a resistant strain is give you a shot of whiskey and a pat on the back while we watch it progress to heart disease, joint problems, and freaking meningitis/encephalitis. Not a fun time.

You want to keep yourself protected from this, unwanted pregnancy, and all the other nasties out there, so I applaud Trojan for celebrating great defense. Remember, no matter how invincible you think you are, an STI can come in like UMBC and end your streak hard.
