Agreed. I do think it is hypocritical to want less goverment intervention AND want the government to be able to tell two gay people that they cannot get married or that a woman cannot have an abortion though.
Grappler, there are some things that the government must do, and the first one of those is protect the rights of its citizens. I understand the whole “it’s my body, I can do what I want” thing when it comes to drugs, but once you start interfering with another person’s (born or unborn) right to live, the government has to do something. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Straight from the founders.
And as far as gay marriage, I could care less whether two people want to get married/call themselves married/whatever, but I have a problem with the government recognizing a gay marriage as equal to a heterosexual marriage. Granting rights to a gay couple through civil unions is fine, I just don’t think we should recognize gay marriage as equal with “normal” marriage. Equal rights, not equal recognition.
This conversation will go nowhere because I do not believe that life begins at conception, so in my eyes an unborn fetus does not have any rights. I also do not see the big deal about allowing homosexual marriage to be considered on the same level as heterosexual marriage.
To add a little context here, the law in America has been that life begins at birth, not before, since the 1700’s. It’s not like allowing abortion is really a big step here. This is really a moral decision that should be made by the couple dealing with the situation. Personally, I think it is a terrible thing to do, but, hey, it keeps the poor, uneducated population down a bit.
Most people who whine for small government are complete hypocrites who don’t understand how it all works- and I like small government. But what so many of the jackasses at political rallies like the Tea Partiers don’t seem to understand is that the government already subsidizes their food, their children’s education, their health care costs (keyword is costs, not coverage), their retirement (Social Security), and their retirement health care (Medicare/Medicaid). This all while these same people want government to regulate gay marriage, profanity/nudity/and the like on TV and in the movies, etc. You can’t claim to be for small government, then pick and choose what the government regulates just because it’s convient to you or fits your own moral agenda. Fucking sheep. Ron Paul is the only man in Washington who is actually for small government and means what he says, even if some of his ideas are bit too radical for my tastes.
Gay marriage will perpetuate the disintegration of the traditional family structure, which has more to do with the rate of poverty in the United States than any other cause. Of course, government handouts exacerbate this breakdown by unintentionally incentivizing fathers to leave their families with these extra “welfare funds.”
This is just an example. Certain moral issues SHOULD be regulated by the government because they lead to a moral and ethical disintegration of American society, which has, unto recently in our nation’s history, successfully perpetuated high moral standards. These issues include abortion, gay marriage, feminism, etc.
The only role of government should be military, courts, and police. These are in place to make sure your basic human rights are protected. Everything else is unjustified theft of tax payer dollars.
Look, if gay marriage meant that two guys would be blowing each other in my front lawn, then I would be against it. In reality, gays don’t negatively/positively affect me at all so they can do whatever they want.
Hot dog, you are basically paraphrasing an argument made by Lord Patrick Devlin in the late ’50s.
This argument was subsequently destroyed by HLA Hart. Some people think that pre-marital sex is symptomatic of declining morals in America—would you outlaw that?
