It was the ISI (Pakistan’s intel agency) which designated which groups within the muj received what amount of money and arms. THEY were the ones who created or at least provided the majority of the support for the Taliban, Hesbi- Islami, the Haqqani Network, etc. Bin Laden never received any sort of aid from the US… our govt. and bin Ladin have both publically stated this. Additionally, Milt Bearden who was the CIA chief of station in Islamabad during a significant portion of the war (i.e., the guy who ran the CIA operations in Pakistan and Afghanistan) said that the US did everything it could do avoid arming the so called “Arab” Afghans (the people who left the Arabian peninsula to go fight in Afghanistan) and favored the Pashtu, Tajik, and Uzbek tribesmen living in Afghanistan as they were easier to train, less fundamentalist, and did not have larger ambitions of forming some sort of international Muslim caliphate as the Arabian jihadists did.

OJdidit- Actually, I read the book Charlie Wilson’s War along with parts of a couple others; I don’t think most people share your opinion of having knowledge of the reason we are at war in Afghanistan as “useless information”. Also, I didn’t start by posting an entirely ignorant statement about the original post… that was the other guy.
Pursuitoffratiness- Ronald Reagan said that a nuclear war with the Soviet Union would result in over 100 million American deaths- if we won. The relatively peaceful destruction of the USSR was brought on in large part by the massive amount of money and military effort they squandered in Afghanistan. You can’t place the blame of 9/11 on our operations there. It was the Clinton Administration who neglected to see to it that Afghanistan didn’t fall into civil war, with the Taliban coming to power. It was the Clinton Administration who declined to take bin Laden out multiple times while he was in Sudan, even though the Sudanese government offered him to us. Both of these occured in the 90’s, well after Charlie Wilson and the Reagan Administration’s efforts to defeat the Soviets.
