Based off of Chris Miller’s (Dartmouth ’63) writings for the National Lampoon. Note the various references throughout: most notably, the road trip to “Emily Dickinson College,” an amalgam of Mt. Holyoke and Smith College (to which Dartmouth men would make frequent trips). Give the Ivy League (or at least the ones who deserve it) credit where credit is due.
Animal House draws inspiration from writers Chris Miller, Harold Ramis, and producer Ivan Reitman’s experiences in their respective fraternities. Miller was a Alpha Delta at Dartmouth (which everyone has said), Ramis was a ZBT at St. Louis University, and Reitman was a DU at McMasters University in Ontario. Of the three, Miller seems to have had the biggest influence. The swinging door in the Delta Tau Chi house that says “sex room” pays homage to the Alpha Delta house. In addition, the idea for all Delta Tau Chi’s to have nicknames was Miller’s idea. So unless your dad was in one of those houses than I doubt he was serious, but in my experience, and talking with my Dad, it seems that the Old Fraternity Men from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s fratted as hard if not harder than we do today. And therefore were able to draw comparison’s to Animal House.
my dad went to St. Louis and right before the movie came out they asked his fraternity to throw a huge toga party to advertise for animal house….he claims he threw one of the first ever toga parties lol
So your Dad lies to you to try and make himself sound cool?
